Twisty Turn-ey

We at love a good twist, which is why we’ve assembled a list of listens guaranteed to give you that feeling you got after finishing The Sixth Sense. We’re fairly certain M. Night himself would approve of any one of these listens for their ability to make you audibly gasp at any one of their surprising revelations.

My Sister’s Keeper – Jodi Picoult

Anna is living in her sister’s shadow- literally. While conceived out of love, she was also planned out as a genetic match for her chronically and severely ill sister, Kate. After numerous surgeries, blood and stem cell donations, etc, Anna has had enough and goes so far as to enlist a lawyer to emancipate herself from her parents. Piccoult doesn’t shy away from the tough ethical questions here, as we begin to wonder…just why is Anna really doing all of this?

Shutter Island – Dennis Lehane

Teddy Daniels is a US marshall sent to a mental health facility on a remote island to investigate the disappearance of a patient. The entire listen is atmospheric and unnerving, and the very setting invites a feeling of eerie expectation. Expertly paced with thrilling momentum you’ll race to the end to find out just who disappeared, how…and whether or not everyone is who they seem.

The Host – Stephanie Meyer

You’d think an alien invasion/ literal hostile takeover of humans’ bodies and minds would be twisty enough, but not for Stephanie Meyer. Oh no. Here we have a race of parasitic extra-terrestrials who enjoy inserting themselves into human bodies and taking over…only Wanda’s host is very much still mentally active. Can Melanie (the host) manipulate her memories seen by the alien who holds her mind hostage and gains her freedom (and life) back?

Water for Elephants – Sara Gruen

While this is mostly a love story, at the end we get a mysterious murder which is always fun (as long as it’s fictional). Jacob is a down-on-his-luck new orphan who discovers, then joins a traveling circus at the height of the Great Depression. There, unlucky for him, he falls for one of the main performers…who is also very married to the controlling and sadistic owner of the said circus. Awkward. When they acquire an elephant and Jacob is the only one who can train it, he becomes an invaluable member of the crew and a growing threat to everything the owner has…who will win? And who kills who?
