Christmas Books to Read this Holiday Season

Christmas movies, Christmas decorations, Christmas dinners and now Christmas books. This season is filled with joy wrapped in red and green and tied with a bow. You may be struggling to feel the Christmas spirit this year in the middle of a pandemic. These books will help you feel the Christmas spirit and maybe even motivate you to start that Christmas shopping you have been putting off.

Mr. Dickens and His Carol – Samantha Silva

It’s not Christmas without Dickens as some say. Samantha Silva would definitely agree with this in her comical and haunting offshoot of Dickens. The story focuses on not Ebneezer Scrooge but Charles Dickens himself. Silva takes Dickens to London when he gets hit with writer’s block. While in London he goes on lots of walks and we find lots of details that are then put into Dickens famous book A Christmas Carol. This novel is a Christmas time favorite for many, especially if you love A Christmas Carol. Download it here.

The Deal of a Lifetime – Fredrik Backman

The Deal of a Lifetime is a father’s story to his son that is told every Christmas Eve. It’s the story of a man finding that he might be able to help a little girl dying from cancer and is stuck in the hospital during Christmas. But he can’t do it without making things right with his son first. Backman brings this story back to what Christmas is all about, not presents, Santa or a big meal but sacrifice, forgiveness and love. Listen to this novella here.

Winter Street – Elin Hildebrand

Elin Hildebrand has been hitting the bestseller list a lot recently with her book 28 Summers. Her Christmas novel, Winter Street, kicks off her Winter Series. Patriarch Kelley Quinn runs the Winter Street Inn where his family gathers every holiday season. Every holiday some shattering revelations come up (think love triangles, secrets, federal fraud). This is the perfect start to the Winter Series that in total has 4 books. Start the series here today.

Starry Night – Debbie Macomber

If you can often be found binging Hallmark Christmas movies in December, it’s time to shut off the TV and listen to Debbie Macomber’s Starry Night novel. Focused on a writer for a column who takes off to Alaska to hunt down a recluse best-selling author, you follow her journey through the wilderness. Of course it wouldn’t be Hallmark Christmas movie-esque without a love story. You will find that the author she is tracking down doesn’t seem to be so nomad, hasn’t had a haircut in years, but instead a handsome introvert. Binge the story here!

Hiddensee: A Tale of the Once and Future Nutcracker – Gregory Maguire

Hiddensee is an incredible spinoff of the Christmas ballet classic The Nutcracker. Gregory Maguire is famous for his story that took place in a land called Oz in Wicked. In 2017 Maguire took his turn at taking his readers on another journey through the backstory of The Nutcracker. Focused on Drosselmeier, the toymaker who creates the legendary wooden toy that leads Klara on quite the adventure this story is perfect to put you in the Christmas mood. Listen to it here.

A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens

Some may say it’s not Christmas without the Christmas Carol. We may not go quite that far, but we do agree that it is not Christmas without at least one classic. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is the perfect classic for this season. The story tracks the transformation of Scrooge who truly isn’t joyful and can’t stand anything that is joyful, including Christmas, to a joyful, kind man. This transformation happens through a series of supernatural events with the past, present and future. Whether you’ve seen the movie, watched the play, read the book already or just heard about the story in your work break room, this is a classic you should listen to today. Download it here!
