Start Reading ASAP: 6 of the Best Fantasy Audiobook Series of All Time

Fantasy writers have an immense world-building gift. The worlds, characters, races, languages, religions, and governments they create are fantastic. Like other books, fantasy book series provide a medium for learning, as there are many life lessons that can be taught in these books.

However, these books provide another element that makes them some of the most enjoyable books ever read. In fact, many fantasy book series are referred to as not just well-written books, but as some of the most epic stories of all time.

Here are just a few of the many, many fantasy book series that readers need to add to their collection to escape into a fantasy world with plenty of love, adventure, and yes, even important life lessons.

1. Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

The Chronicles of Narnia is a true classic, which is why it’s made its way to the top of the list.

Long-held as a children’s fable, this series is a great read for young and not-so-young alike. The books tell how evil came to be in the beautiful land of Narnia and the various children who are drawn into the world of magical talking animals to eradicate evil and restore peace.

As with many fantasy novels, this fantasy book series has a deeper meaning, relating to Christianity in the words of the author himself.

2. A Song of Fire and Ice by George R.R. Martin

Nearly everyone has heard of this series due to the popularity of the HBO television show Game of Thrones.

A Song of Fire and Ice tells the story of two fictional kingdoms and the violent struggles amongst the nobility as they vie for the throne or fight for their independence from the throne.

Readers will get a good dose of drama and romance, though be aware that some of the romance is incestuous (unknown in some cases, not so much in others). The stories also contain interesting, made-up races, monsters, and dragons.

3. Dark Tower by Stephen King

For readers who are looking for something out of the ordinary, Dark Tower is a must-read. The series combines multiple genres, including fantasy, Western, horror, and dark fiction.

The story takes place in the fantastical West – it’s like a typical Western, complete with gunslingers, but there’s a definite fantasy element as well.

King weaves links from these stories to other books of his as well, which makes these books incredibly intriguing. Additionally, readers will notice there’s a nod toward Arthurian legend, as well.

4. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

No fantasy book series list would be complete without mentioning the Lord of the Rings series, which is arguably the most well-known, revered, and loved fantasy series of all time. It’s so beloved that there have been multiple movies made based on the books, some of which have gone on to gross billions of dollars in ticket sales worldwide.

Lord of the Rings tells of the epic journey of a group of (sometimes reluctant) heroes who are desperately trying to save the entire world from evil. The heroes include hobbits, elves, and dwarves.

The Lord of the Rings series is known as one of the first – if not the first – series of books in the fantasy genre. Books that have come after it are often measured against it and many authors have taken inspiration from various components within these books.

5. Lunar Chronicles by Merissa Meyer

Readers who are fans of fairy tales, like Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood should absolutely try this fantasy book series.

Each of the five novels in this series delves into the lives of a female fairy tale lead but puts them into a sci-fi/fantasy world with cyborgs, moon colonists, and androids.

Readers will get something off-the-cuff that still feels familiar with this series. It’s definitely worth checking out.

6. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

The Red Queen series is a young adult (YA) fantasy. The story takes place in a kingdom where people are segregated by the color of their blood. People with red blood are poor and ordinary, while those with silver blood are the elites who also have supernatural powers.

Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old girl with red blood ends up working in the Silver Palace. During her time there, working for people she hates, she finds out that she, too, possesses incredible powers. Fearful of her abilities, the silver blooded nobility keeps her hidden in plain sight, keeping a close eye on her so she doesn’t upset their balance of power. Mare has other ideas, though.

New to the Fantasy Genre? Prepare to Be Transported into Incredible Worlds

As amazing as these fantasy book series are, there are still many people that haven’t read these books. Sure, they’ve heard of them – they can’t help but hear of them with all the media coverage of Harry Potter movies, the Game of Thrones television show (and its controversial ending), or the numerous Lord of the Rings movies.

Still, there are some folks that haven’t had the opportunity to read books in this genre. Readers who have yet to give fantasy a try are missing out and should definitely do some investigative reading.

Fantasy writers have a gift that allows readers to quickly get immersed in their stories. Before they know it, readers are transported into interesting, beautiful worlds that provide them with a brief respite from real life.
