From the #1 New York Times bestsellng author of Seeing Red comes a "scorching...action-filled" (Publishers Weekly) tale of corruption and betrayal, revenge, and reversal.
When newswoman Britt Shelley wakes up to find herself in bed with Jay Burgess, a star detective in the Charleston PD, she remembers nothing of how she got there—or how Jay wound up dead. Handsome, hard-partying Jay was one of four heroic city officials who risked their lives five years earlier to lead others to safety from a catastrophic fire. His lifelong friend, Raley Gannon, was later assigned to investigate the blaze. But Raley never finished the inquiry because one calamitous night his career was destroyed by scandal. Now, the newswoman whose biased reporting helped bring about Raley's downfall might be his only chance to vindicate himself and get justice for the fire's victims. But the more Raley and Britt discover about that fateful day, the more perilous the situation becomes, until they're not only chasing the truth but running for their lives.

"I simply love Sandra Brown. I first started out reading her early romances and I think she is one of the best (romantic) suspense/thriller authors around today. Although I still read many ebooks, I prefer my suspense novels in audio form. While Smoke Screen is not her best work, I rate it 4 stars because it's still a well-written and thoroughly enjoyable read with twists and turns."

“Perfectly plotted…Sin-tillating suspense.”
— People“Brown laces her dependable romantic fireworks with a solid action-filled plot.”
— Publishers Weekly“Wonderfully treacherous tale…A lightning-fast timeline keeps the plot racing and the characters in turmoil without sacrificing a touch of romance. This is Brown at her best!”
— RT Book Reviews (4½ stars)“Gripping and elegantly structured…a true master of suspense.”
— Providence Journal (RI)" Sandra Brown's stories never disappoint. Lots of twists and turns and suspense. "
— Heidi, 2/12/2014" I did not want to put this book down. There was a real twist that had me gasping in shock out loud. I just could not believe what had happened. This is a definite must read. "
— Jennifer, 1/28/2014" For light reading, I enjoyed this book...nothing special...somewhat predictable...but good enough! "
— Sue, 1/23/2014" I think this would be an excellent movie. Fun to read and hard to put down. "
— Jenny, 1/21/2014" Fun and easy to read, suspense thriller. And the whodunit had a great twist at the end. "
— Jen, 1/18/2014" I loved it, just enough mystery to keep me entertained and guessing and not too much romance. Perfect book for logan and I to read together. "
— Tasha, 1/11/2014" While it was an entertaining story, I had a big problem with the timeline of the story and backstory. I was also bothered that Raley would go to such extremes to help Britt when Britt was the person who ruined his life several years earlier. "
— Steve, 1/11/2014" A decent book to read. "
— Cathy, 12/30/2013" I enjoyed this book and the challenge of the twists to the plot and being able to guess who the "bad guy" was before being told - it still left me guessing whether or not I was right clear to the end. "
— Barbara, 12/29/2013" As usual Sandra Brown creates quite an exciting story. I thoroughly enjoy her books and the settings she uses. "
— Shirley, 12/23/2013" I was engrossed in this book all weekend. How terrifying to have your world turned upside down... no one to trust. I couldn't put it down. I had to know how all of this came about and how on earth everything would be put right. "
— Jesica, 12/5/2013" Very enjoyable. All the Sandra Brown books I've read, thrillers, not romance, have been very good. I was completely confused by the sex scene on page 434 (paperback copy). What the heck is the "slit" she's talking about? The tip of his penis? Very strange. "
— John, 12/5/2013" OK thriller. You will keep reading. However nothing too sophisticated or special. "
— Isabel, 11/26/2013" Gripping and non -put-downable....the reason I so enjoy Sandra Brown's books. The twists in this plot were a little hard to follow, and the decisions and some actions of the heros were hard to understand...but a very good read nonetheless. "
— Elizabeth, 9/14/2013" Her signature formula for romance was missing from this novel - as well as character development. I never got the feeling that there was a "love" connection between the two main characters. And, the remaining characters never were fully developed. The entire story was summed up in the last chapter. "
— Nicole, 6/17/2013" I could not stop listening to this and I had figured out who the bad person was about 3/4 of the way through the book. "
— Shelleen, 5/21/2013" Very good, another good book about the corruption of the police departments. "
— Brasel, 5/14/2013" This is a good book with a good twist. Easy read. "
— Terry, 4/26/2013" Although somewhat formulaic (and despite figuring out the "who"), there was redemption in the end. The twists and turns involving the "why" and "how" kept my interest. "
— Linda, 4/7/2013" A very good mystery type read. A little slow to get into, but after the first few chapters, I was not able to put it down. Surprise ending as you would expect, but not what you would expect, at least I didnt. "
— Leslie, 11/24/2012" Quick read for the beach or pool! "
— Cindy, 7/9/2012" My favorite book by Sandra so far. Ibloved the characters and pace. She is amazing! "
— Jenn, 5/10/2012" Loved this one----quick read----one of her best "
— Pattie, 12/23/2011" Fabulous! Great story line that kept me guessing. Very fast read. "
— Rebecca, 10/31/2011" Good book. I did figure who was behind it. Now I need to watch the movie. Another good book by Sandra Brown "
— Sharon, 10/12/2011" Finished this book in a day and a half, really liked it!<br/> "
— Sue, 5/23/2011" The unraveling of a mysterious fire in a police station is tightly scripted and fast paced, but there's a lot more sex of the raunchy, nasty variety here than I would prefer. "
— Elizabeth, 4/30/2011" A very good story it was pretty much what you would expect from Sandra Brown. I did not think there was much of a mystery here though it was entertaining. "
— Steve, 4/25/2011" Kept you guessing till the end...a good thing in a suspense novel. "
— Ida, 4/11/2011" I did this as an audiobook. It was a good listen while sitting in traffic. "
— Anne, 4/7/2011" Although somewhat formulaic (and despite figuring out the "who"), there was redemption in the end. The twists and turns involving the "why" and "how" kept my interest. "
— Linda, 3/24/2011" This was a really good story that really kept my interest. Liked the plot line. "
— Jill, 3/22/2011" This was the first Sandra Brown book I had ever read, and she has definitely made a fan out of me! "
— Shannon, 3/13/2011" I re-read this after several years and felt like I was re-discovering a new author. Her work is fresh, fast and intriguing. I am going to start reading her books again. "
— Teresa, 3/7/2011" Another Sandra Brown book I read before. And another Sandra Brown book that was just as good the second time around. Thank goodness for GoodReads so I don't read it a third time. lol So many books, so little time :) "
