The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Seeing Red presents a spine-tingling story of murder and betrayal in high society Savannah, where a homicide detective finds his career—and life—on the line.
When Savannah detective Duncan Hatcher is summoned to an unusual crime scene, he knows discretion is key. Influential Judge Cato Laird's beloved trophy wife, Elise, has fatally shot a burglar. She claims self-defense, but Duncan suspects she's lying, and puts his career in jeopardy by investigating further. Then, in secret, Elise makes an incredible allegation, which he dismisses as the lie of a cunning woman trying to exploit his intense attraction to her. But when Elise goes missing, Duncan finds that trusting the wrong person could mean the difference between life and death for both of them.

"I thought this book was pretty good. My daughter and I picked it up because the cover is TOTALLY cool (you cannot get the full effect from the picture here). I am a sucker for covers, and the hard back was on sale for like $5 or something. So, anyway I told my daughter I had to read it first and it's a good thing, because it is not age appropriate for her (due to sex and language). However, it was an enjoyable easy read."

“If you want romantic suspense that has teeth…Sandra Brown is your gal.”
— Stephen King“A great, entertaining read, with lots of surprising twists and turns, credibly flawed characters and a love affair that's as steamy as a Savannah summer.”
— Lisa Scottoline“A masterful storyteller.”
— USA Today“Perfectly plotted.”
— People“No one does steamy suspense like Brown.”
— Publishers Weekly“Gripping and absorbing, this is Brown's best thriller in years and a must-read for her many devotees.”
— Booklist“From page one, the awesome Brown does an excellent job dishing out chilling suspense and double-crossing motives. The obsessive love story ratchets up the emotions as the hero finds himself in a fairly untenable situation.”
— RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!)" i am reading bestsellers for work. i really did not like this book. i will even be childish and call it stupid! that's how i feel about it. there are some books that are bestsellers because they are actually good and then there are some books that are bestsellers because a long time ago maybe the author once wrote a good book. this is definitely the latter in my opinion. "
— Blaise, 1/28/2014" Always enjoy Sandra Brown's books. This is about a woman who is married to a judge that kills an intruder. She says it was self-defense but the detective doesn't believe her. Many twists and turns and just fun to read. "
— Cris, 1/27/2014" What a great book. The characters were well developed and I really got in to it. It's was very interesting to see the story through the lead detective's eyes and the end had so many twists and turns that it really got exciting! It's nothing too in depth or profound, but definitely a fun summer read that I kept thinking about long after I had gotten out of the car (audio book for me). "
— Tina, 1/21/2014" This was a good book, but I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting for "the big finish" to come along. I was disappointed and found this to be predictable - BUT it was well written and did keep my interest throughout =o) "
— Missy, 1/18/2014" Don't look at my vote, I'll always give to Sandra my best, cause I absolutely adore her writing, the thrill while reading her books. And this one was as always amazing! Loved it! "
— Aure, 1/13/2014" I did read the book and enjoyed the easy read that it was. I do not quite understand the intense appeal that this author has as the stories are good but that is about it. A surprise ending it was but getting there was sometimes trying. "

— Kristin, 1/6/2014" Even though this book got off on a slow and confusing start, overall I thought this was a great book. This is sure a long way from Sandra Brown's earlier novels I read. Her writing got much better detailed and suspenseful. "

— Becky, 12/6/2013" I had to read this book for a couple of reasons...1. my mom bought it for me and it would be just plain rude not to, 2. Since it's set in my hometown and I used to work at SPD I couldn't resist. I have to say, it didn't let me down. Really great read and it kept me guessing the whole time. "
— Christy, 10/8/2013" Got a little long for me. Too much repetition. "

— Jbash1, 11/18/2011" This was a little better than I expected, but certainly wasn't the mystery thriller of the century. I read it because it will soon be a made-for-tv movie on TNT. I thought that it would be fun to read it and then watch it. "
— Heidi, 10/12/2011" Excellent - I love reading Sandra Brown. She keeps your attention from beginning to end! "
— Eva, 10/5/2011" Couldn't put it down! I kept telling myself to finish the current chapter and walk away ( I had a ton of things to do), but I simply couldn't! Every time a chapter ended I had to continue reading to find out what happened next. "

— Shelly, 4/5/2011" I loved the plot. Sandra Brown keeps you guessing through the whole book, just when you think that you have things figured out, she gives you a nice turn! Surprising ending that I didn't see coming! But I loved this book! "
— Heather, 4/4/2011" I read this book in a day. The plot was engaging, the characters complex, and she kept me uncertain to the very end about who was good and who was bad. "
— Carol, 3/24/2011" Didn't like it quite as uch of some of her other books, but still pretty good. "
— Jane, 3/18/2011" It gripped me in the first several chapters. The suspense never stopped! Interesting plot twists, and I could not solve the mystery! "
— Ashley, 3/14/2011" Very typical Sandra Brown fare...Romantic thriller involving likable characters and enough twists to keep the pages turning...a great cop from Savannah, GA falls for the prime murder suspect, wife of a judge no less...serious literature, nah, but a fun read nontheless "
— Mark, 2/24/2011" I really liked this book. Very interesting characters. "
— Leigh, 2/9/2011" This was a good book, but I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting for "the big finish" to come along. I was disappointed and found this to be predictable - BUT it was well written and did keep my interest throughout =o) "
