Elisa Laird is her husband's pride and joy. A trophy wife ten years his junior, she ably performs the societal duties that her husband's career dictates. Judge Laird glories in his community standing. And his three passions are well-known: his golf game, his bench, and his wife. So when homicide detectives Duncan Hatcher and his partner DeeDee Bowen are summoned to the Laird's home in the middle of the night, they know that discretion and a quick, thorough investigation are the keys to keeping their jobs. Elise and the Judge claim that Elise fired her pistol at a man who was burglarizing her husband's study. It's an open and shut case, at first glance. But Elise is acting strange. DeeDee doesn't fall for her "victim" act, instead seeing Elise as a beautiful manipulator whose actions just don't make sense. Despite himself and his partner's warnings, Duncan finds himself falling for the frightened young woman, and jeopardizing his own life to find out whether the Judge has hidden reasons for his wife to "disappear."

It's a deadly game filled with lies, seductions, and tragic pasts. Duncan and Elise may spend their lives looking over their shoulders, if they can survive each other's betrayals... Download and start listening now!

" i am reading bestsellers for work. i really did not like this book. i will even be childish and call it stupid! that's how i feel about it. there are some books that are bestsellers because they are actually good and then there are some books that are bestsellers because a long time ago maybe the author once wrote a good book. this is definitely the latter in my opinion. "

" Always enjoy Sandra Brown's books. This is about a woman who is married to a judge that kills an intruder. She says it was self-defense but the detective doesn't believe her. Many twists and turns and just fun to read. "

" What a great book. The characters were well developed and I really got in to it. It's was very interesting to see the story through the lead detective's eyes and the end had so many twists and turns that it really got exciting! It's nothing too in depth or profound, but definitely a fun summer read that I kept thinking about long after I had gotten out of the car (audio book for me). "

" This was a good book, but I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting for "the big finish" to come along. I was disappointed and found this to be predictable - BUT it was well written and did keep my interest throughout =o) "

" I thought this book was pretty good. My daughter and I picked it up because the cover is TOTALLY cool (you cannot get the full effect from the picture here). I am a sucker for covers, and the hard back was on sale for like $5 or something. So, anyway I told my daughter I had to read it first and it's a good thing, because it is not age appropriate for her (due to sex and language). However, it was an enjoyable easy read. "

" I did read the book and enjoyed the easy read that it was. I do not quite understand the intense appeal that this author has as the stories are good but that is about it. A surprise ending it was but getting there was sometimes trying. "

" Even though this book got off on a slow and confusing start, overall I thought this was a great book. This is sure a long way from Sandra Brown's earlier novels I read. Her writing got much better detailed and suspenseful. "
