Born into a fine old Charleston family, Hammond Cross is determined to be the city's next district attorney-without sacrificing his integrity. Prosecuting the sensational murder of real estate magnate Lute Pettijohn could be his ticket into the office. Yet while Hammond anticipates his success, someone near him is plotting his downfall-- Steffi Mundell, colleague, ex-lover, and rival for the DA's office--Rory Smilow, the homicide detective without equal and Hammond's avowed enemy--the wily and beautiful Davee Pettijohn, Lute's widow and Hammond's lifelong friend, who's too honest to mourn the husband she despised--and Hammond's prime suspect, the mysterious woman who shares the secret that would be fatal to Hammond's ambitions. For the first time in his career, he's bending the rules in favor of the suspect. All clues point to her guilt. Yet she holds in reserve the perfect alibi-Hammond Cross.

"This is the first book that I have read by Sandra Brown - and I love her! This book was full to the brim twists, turns, roadblocks and red herrings - the story that keeps me completely engaged! Her detail of places and people is incredible and her settings provide the backdrop for conflict and murder! Finally, she understands human failings and wraps her story around them - all of her characters have some kind of flaw. While the book is a longer read, it's definitely worth it! I already have two more of her books on my nightstand and I can't wait to read them!"

" This one caught me off guard. I kept reading because I couldn't figure out exactly who the culprit was. Then, when I found out who it was, I was truly surprised that I hadn't realized it all along! "
— Beverly, 2/14/2014" To me "The Alibi" started out slow and was a little hard to follow at first. Since I listened to the audio book, I don't know if it was the narrator's voice or the actual story that made me have that thought. However, as the book progressed the story got really intriguing. Lots of mystery, thrills, and little romance, but good romance. This is not my favorite Sandra Brown, but it's up there at the top. "
— Myra, 2/13/2014" Not a fan of how vulgar Sandra can be, but very good plot! "

— Susan, 1/24/2014" This was my first large print book - got to admit not searching for glasses was a great pleasure, but the number of extra pages needed to accommodate large print made a heavy book - so, I may have to go back to small print and 150 reading glasses:) The book was entertaining. "

I'll be reading more of her books in the future! "

— Laurie, 2/2/2011" Unbelieveably boring, predictable with dull characters who I find hard to believe talk like they do. "I wish you no umbrage" Jeesh. This didn't even make a good beach read [I live in Florida so can read beach reads all year long]. Definately skip this one "
— Jean, 1/28/2011" Damn Good.... Hammond Cross a very powerful and intense character. Dr. Alex Ladd, his equally subtle and yet strong mystery woman. Do not miss the story of this amazing story of a man torn between his duty and protecting the woman he loves. "
