Eve Dallas is one tough cop. She’s got no problem dealing with a holiday reveler in a red suit who plunges thirty-seven stories and gives new meaning to the term “sidewalk Santa.” But when she gets back to the station and Trudy Lombard shows up, it’s all Eve can do to hold it together. Instantly, she’s plunged back into the past, to the days when she was a vulnerable, traumatized girl - trapped in foster care with the twisted woman who now sits in front of her, smiling. Trudy claims she just wanted to see how Eve was doing. But Eve’s husband, Roarke, suspects otherwise - and his suspicions prove correct when Trudy arrives at his office demanding money in exchange for keeping the ugly details of his wife’s childhood a secret. Barely restraining himself, Roarke shows her the door - and makes it clear that she’d be wise to get out of New York and never bother him or his wife again. But just a few days later, Trudy’s found on the floor of her hotel room, a mess of bruises and blood. A cop to the core, Eve is determined to solve the case, if only for the sake of Trudy’s bereaved son. Unfortunately, Eve is not the only one to have suffered at this woman’s hands, and she and Roarke will follow a circuitous, dangerous path to find out who turned this victimizer into a victim.

"Memory in Death by J D Robb is an excellent addition to her "In Death" series. I am not a fan of detective or murder mystery reader. However, I love this series. A futuristic cop and her not exactly legit wealthy husband make for humor, intense drama and a sweet romance."
— Leslie (5 out of 5 stars)
" Peabody is annoying and a user . The way I see her friendship with Eve is Peabody uses her she’s out for what she can get. Her character really annoys me "
— Tessa, 10/17/2022" LOVED IT!!!! Super everything. Read It, Enjoy It, and Read It AGAIN. ;) (this is my favorite series) "
— Caro, 2/20/2014" I enjoyed this book. I didn't want the victim to be killed as soon. Wanted to see what would have happened if her blackmail plan went through "
— Gjbates, 2/19/2014" Had some really great moments. An enjoyable read. "
— Laura, 2/19/2014" Keeps you engaged - I couldn't put it down. "
— Debbie, 2/13/2014" Takes place in the year 2059. It is a murder mystery. Kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed it. "
— Robin, 2/10/2014" [Copied across from Library Thing; 9 February 2013] "
— Kerry, 1/25/2014" Interesting character development, but again, although these are enjoyable (or I would not have been reading through the series), there is not really much new here beyond decent world building and enjoyable supporting cast. "
— S, 1/16/2014" This was the first of the In Death series I read, but I found it so easy to follow and "get", even though I was starting in the middle. Eve's internal tug-of-war over her childhood becomes even clearer here. Powerful Memories, powerful growth. Love this. "
— Amy, 1/10/2014" Not a bad book, but just like Eve, it's hard to feel interested in a subject if you just don't care. Well-written as usual. I like getting more of Eve's background, but the actual mystery was uninteresting and I knew who the bad guy was from the minute they were introduced. "
— Katiedavis, 1/9/2014" Still loving this series. I thought I might try to catch up this year, but I just don't see it happening. "
— Stephanie, 12/10/2013" This was a fantastic book, a great look into Eve's life between her and her dad, and going to the Academy, and yeah, it was a great book! "
— Louisa, 12/10/2013" This was fantastic! So much more than the murder it was how Eve deals with the past that can bring her to her knees! I couldnt put this one down. "
— Jeannine, 12/5/2013" Another in the "Death" series. A quick summer read. "
— Dave, 11/22/2013" Another excellent Eve & Roarke story. This one involves a person from Eve's past, a woman who was a foster mother to her is killed. Even though Eve hates the woman, she's tenacious about finding her killer. "
— Patricia, 10/6/2013" It was like all of the others in the series. I liked that I figured out who the killer was early on. "
— Agaughan68, 4/27/2013" It really shows how no matter things change , time passes, the past will always be there to haunt us. Some people , like Trudy are just simply that twisted!!! "
— Lubna, 2/9/2013" Eve's foster mother comes to find her in NYC and not for the memories. Roarke's partnership with Eve continues to grow in this novel. "
— Jan, 7/9/2012" Not the best whodunit of the series, but there's something charming about how uncomfortable Eve is around the holidays. "
— Theresa, 7/4/2012" I love this series--it never disappoints! "
— Antoinette, 2/11/2012" I liked how this one pulled in Eve's past, but I knew who the bad guy was right away. She twisted it a little, so I didn't get the how, but I still knew who did it. Maybe it's just b/c I've been reading so many of these, but I hope I haven't gotten her pattern down... "
— pianogal, 12/6/2011" I'm listining to this one on CD and on Chapter 3. I've read before and it's excellent as is the whole series. "
— Leslie, 9/10/2011" I think I cried in this one. I read two in-death books over the weekend. Memory was a keeper and Im glad I read it. Eve was kick ass. I knew it was the daughter in law from the beginning. She wasn't grieving enough "
— Keira, 8/20/2011" I really like this series! "
— Stacey, 6/14/2011" One of Eve's nightmares walks back into her life: her first foster mother. None too soon, she is murdered. The only problem with Trudy's death is that Eve has the most acute motive to kill her. "
— Joy, 5/14/2011" great read, always a twist and more "
— Diana, 4/14/2011" Foster mother's evil festers even after revenged "
— Helen, 3/31/2011" First book of the series that I read that heavily mentioned other cases. It was OK, but if a reader had just picked up this book, they may have been a bit lost. "
— Michael, 3/28/2011" Really good book, Eve and Rourke have a nice Christmas and Eve's evil foster mom bites the dust! "
— G, 3/6/2011" This is my least favorite of the books so far, as I've been re-reading. I really can't put my finger on exactly why, but the pace felt slower and I was less invested in the investigation pieces than I normally am. Maybe because Eve herself was less invested? "
— Angela, 2/7/2011" Love this series! This was the first time I figured out the killer from the very beginning. Still really enjoyed the book. "
— Patty, 1/11/2011" The whole series is starting to be repetitive. Plus, Eve's character is not progressing at all. You want to see her grow up a bit. "
— Chantal, 1/11/2011" What a villain! I really liked Roarke telling Trudy what he would do to her if she didn't leave Eve alone. Would have been 5 stars except Trudy's son was a bit of a schmoe. "
— Janet, 1/9/2011" Kind of slow..it dragged on too much going on and on...I figured out what happened right out The book felt like didn't have enough material "
— Ledda, 11/22/2010" Two-haiku review:

Eve's first foster mom
Wants two million for silence.
Gets herself murdered.

Eve's demons arise,
Memories of mistreatment.
Can she still solve crime? "
— Dee, 11/13/2010" Eve has Christmas and compassion? Character growth with Eve. Happier Christmas than last year. Just after the clones, this was almost anti-climatic. Good, just not my favorite. "
