How does an innocent lady find herself forced to wed a royal spy who seduced her—by mistake? For Lady Rebecca Marshall, a whirlwind of passion and excitement begins when, to her mother’s great delight, she becomes a maid of honor at the court of Queen Victoria. Rebecca’s mother sees this appointment as a golden opportunity for Rebecca to make a good match.
At court, Rebecca innocently steps into the rivalry between the queen’s spymaster and the noblewoman in charge of the maids of honor who is using the maids to spy on powerful courtiers. Soon Rebecca is entangled in a web of deceit with the charming marquis Rupert St. John. The devastatingly handsome n’er-do-well is the cousin of Raphael Locke, with whom Rebecca was once infatuated. What she doesn’t know is that Rupert is a secret agent of the crown who leads a double life.
When Rupert obtains proof that Rebecca is spying on him, he seduces her. He hardly suspects her guileless nature. Forced to the altar, Rupert believes that Rebecca has set a trap of the worst sort in order to marry into his powerful family. Although he vows never to be faithful to his beautiful wife, as Rupert comes to know Rebecca’s wit, adventurous spirit, and generous nature, his vow of revenge turns into a desire to share many passionate nights only with his wife for the rest of his life.

"Loved this book through and through ! Johanna Lindsey is an artist at writing a romance. It's a book no one should miss if you love a blazing brew of a dashing rogue and a feisty - yet innocent - lass !! "
— Persiphone (5 out of 5 stars)
" I like Johanna Lindsey books. The plots are simple, the sex is descriptive and you know the ending will work out in the heroine's favor. They are a nice change from books that require me to think and worry over what is going to happen next. This one is no exception, except not as many sex scenes as normal. "
— Kristina, 2/3/2014" I'm going to start out with a positive: Rupert, "the Hero", is adorable. Now for the negatives: Rebecca, is not. Her banter and her anger were so unfounded most of the time I didn't know what she was talking about. I thought maybe there were sentences that were left out of the book because it didn't make sense. The whole spy thing in the palace never amounted to anything and ended up being really stupid. I will read more from this author because some of her stories are outstanding. This was not one of them. "
— Katherine, 2/2/2014" I used to love Johanna Lindsey. Her characters had bite and verve and her sex scenes were so hot that they sizzled. I dont' know what happened. This was terrible. I kept reading hoping it would get better, but it never did. "
— Journeywoman, 1/30/2014" Intrigue and spying on everyone, Mistrust and jumping to conclusions with lots of assumptions being made without an effort to find out the truth. its all in here. "
— Colleen, 1/18/2014" Again, Lindsey has her characters progress too quickly (for me, anyway), but I did enjoy her protagonists. Unfortunately, she has the tendency to use modern phrases every now and then and it jars me out of her story. Very frustrating. At least her stories are pleasant enough. :) "
— Virginia, 1/16/2014" Love the author, but the book was just okay for me. No big surprises or really good evil villains. I gave it three stars mainly because it was nice to catch brief glimpses of recurring characters... "
— Shawna, 1/14/2014" A very fast read, and a pleasant rainy day diversion, but it needed something for me to get my teeth into. It came close a couple of times but never took me there. "
— Mum, 1/13/2014" Pretty typical Johanna Lindsey "
— Ellen, 11/24/2013" I listened to this in my car. Entertaining. "
— Deborah, 10/22/2013" Started out great, really liked the characters. I don't like it when a romance heroine gets pregnant very early in the novel--or at all--but that's a personal preference. Ending was very cursory, quick, and almost tacked on. A lot of potential there, but disappointing. "
— Kristin, 10/15/2013" I swear Lindsey's heros are so obnoxious now I can't imagine anyone falling in love with them. Let alone her supposedly intelligent heroines. "
— Kez, 9/15/2013" in love with evry reform rakes... "
— Feti, 6/22/2013" Liked Rebecaa's character, she is original and independent. Rupert is so likeable, but he develops into someone I enjoyed reading about. Liked all the intrigue - and the history too. "
— Kim, 10/30/2012" The story was sweet, but the whole spy side of the story was a let down. "
— Potteriffic_prof, 9/21/2012" Lots of "!!!!!" in this book. Was a bit off-setting. The characters were likable. But the "love" aspect hardly believable. More like both parties just found each other sexy. Therefore they wanted sex. Overall somewhat flat. "
— Rosanne, 9/12/2012" This was the 3rd book i've read & well it was boring! Liked the first two, where did she go so wrong with this? Hopefully this is a one off? "
— Katrina, 4/23/2012" My very first Johanna Lindsey book. I've read this book 4 times... the most I've ever reread a book. Absolutely great! "
— Chanel, 12/5/2011" Pure chick lit! A beautiful and feisty virginal heroine along with a handsome roughish hero set in Queen Victoria's court. They get together, they fight.... you know the rest, but it is fun reading for a summer's day. "
— Joyce, 9/7/2011" Just completed some research on Queen Victoria, so the setting of this novel was a pleasant surprise. "
— Academicsupport, 8/19/2011" fell in love with it. lol love it wen the girl gets the rogue at the end.. ;D "
— SANDRA, 5/17/2011" I think it is best book from Mallory family series...i luv James mallory and Georgina anderson they are cute together.... "
— Laderdanishdevi, 5/14/2011" This book had be grinning like a loon. After an afternoon of reading, my face hurts! "
— Laura, 4/7/2011" I liked this book, although this is not the best amongst the Malory series. The plot should have been executed slower, and James should not reveal Georgie's disguise too soon. "
— Nurlely, 1/30/2011" Incredibly silly, great fun, some excellent smut scenes, and like most of the historical romance novels I've read, it goes on for a hundred pages too long. "
— AudryT, 1/29/2011" masa iya ada bajak laut seganteng James Malory a.k.a Kapten Hawke? Kalo iya, mau dong hati aya dibajak sama kapten Hawke ^^ "
— Irene, 1/26/2011" One of My ALL time FAVORITES! I read it again and again! "
— Christy, 1/23/2011" James Malory IS the poster boy for all romance written in the past 20 years. "
