Plot Summary

In Rapture, J.R. Ward brings back her character Matthias, who is a most unlikable sort, but somehow, the author has taught us the realization that redemption is possible for anyone and so we will allow him another chance. Then we are left to compare Mel and Matthias, who are both essentially lost souls searching for redemption, and we find that they are experiencing different levels of a similar struggle. In the story, Mel's character is involved in an accident that leaves the victim with some memory loss but the one thing he does remember is a headstone, and a name.

You will be left wondering why Mel would continue her relationship with a confused and oh-so attractive man once he starts going on about "fallen angels". Instead she is drawn to the task of trying to help him find his redemption and complete his mission to save lost souls. As she and her new found love reconcile the return of his memory and try to solve the mystery of the name Jim Heron, they find themselves immersed in a war between angels and demons.

J.R. Ward is a New York Times bestselling author and winner of the prestigious RITA (Romance Writer's of America) award for Best Paranormal Romance, as well as having been nominated for the award numerous times. Before becoming a writer, she practiced law and served as Chief of Staff for a Harvard Medical School's teaching site. She is very well known as the author of The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series about the lives of six warrior vampires.

"I really enjoyed this book. I was skeptical at first about having Matthias as the main character but I ended up really liking him in this one. I also enjoyed that the female lead was a strong woman who had her faults but knew how to take care of herself too. Looking forward to book 5."

Publisher Summary

Out of the wickedly inventive imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward comes a world where sin and salvation collide in a battle for the future of mankind—where a cynical fallen angel struggles against the seven deadly sins and a demon’s lure over seven chosen souls… Mels Carmichael, reporter for the Caldwell Courier Journal, gets the shock of her life when a man stumbles in front of her car outside the local cemetery. After the accident, his amnesia is just the kind of mystery she likes to solve, but she soon discovers they’re in over their heads with his past. Over their heads with passion, too... As shadows walk the line between reality and another realm, and her lover’s memory begins to come back, the two of them learn that nothing is truly dead and buried. Especially when you’re trapped in a no holds barred war between angels and demons. With a soul on the line, and Mels’s heart at risk, what in Heaven—or in Hell—will it take to save them both?

" I typically love JR Ward. Especially the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. This series, I have enjoyed also. I had a hard time with the over abundance of pop culture references. I know this is common in her books. It took a while to feel drawn into the story and then it was hard to hold on to. I am sure I will continue to read the series because I am invested in the characters but I found this installment less enjoyable. "

" I really hate to give a J.R. Ward book such a low rating, but I just couldn't get involved. I wasn't engaged in the characters, plot, or the series as a whole. Matthias is an unappealing hero to me, which is death to a romance. I'll just have to count down the days until the next book in the Brotherhood comes out. "
