With the war between vampires and those who would slay them heating up; the last thing the Blind King needed was to be charged with overseeing the transformation of a half-breed. The downloadable audiobook Dark Lover: The Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1 is the first in the series about a different breed of vampire by author J.R. Ward.
When Wrath takes on this chore for love of his brother vampire Darius, he unexpectedly finds himself falling under the beautiful girl's spell. Beth never knew her real father; when she is visited by this tantalizing man who calls himself her father's friend and a vampire, she has no idea what she can believe. Leading the Black Dagger Brotherhood of vampires has never been a job that Wrath desired. However, the loss of his parents to the slayers and his heritage demand he pick up the mantle and be king.
Wrath must help Beth through the violent transition that will make her a vampire and end her feelings of being alone in the world. Along with his warrior brothers; he seeks revenge for the death of her father Darius and his slain parents at the hands of their supernatural enemies. Through vivid detail, the author leads us into the realm of a type of a monster we have never before experienced. These are tattooed, leather-wearing vampires who live in the modern hi-tech world of computers, and utilize weapons along with their fists and fangs when in battle. With their beloved mates and mystical deity, the Scribe Virgin; these muscle-bound dark warriors work to defeat their ancient enemy, The Omega and his lessening society.
J. R. Ward went through a number of professions before finding her niche as one of the best-selling authors of paranormal romance today. A law school graduate, she worked in the healthcare industry serving as Chief of Staff at a major medical center. Her passion for writing started as child with short stories and notes in her diary. In 2007 she was awarded the RITA Award for Best Short Contemporary Romance by the Romance Writers of America. These days she resides in the south with her husband and Golden Retriever.
"Dark lover was my first trip into J. R. Ward's world of vampires and I must admit, I was sceptical at the beginning. I'm not much of a vampire person, but I gave it a shot and I was not disappointed at all. I didn't, and still don't, hold much love for Wrath who's the main character in this book, but all the other characters in the book creates such an illusion of a world you can toss yourself right into. The vampires, once I got hold of the idea that they're (in this verse) a subspecies of humans or maybe the other way around, which causes them to be like humans in many ways, but still have dozens of traits that doesn't compare to humans. They're big macho men, but they really are not in touch with themselves and their doubt, thoughts, worries and dialogue is written in a downright hilarious language that connects you with them and makes you want to follow along for the rest of the ride - just to see if you make it, or hit the wall with a crash.Also... there's a lot of naked, and, well... that does not make it less appealing. On a final note, the narrator of this series, Jim Frangione, makes an awesome job of bringing these characters to life. It's worth every minute of the story."

The vampire Darius fears for the life of his half-breed daughter, who is unaware of her unusual destiny. — Earwig 73, 7/19/2020" Liked the story of good vampires with lives that sorta parallels normal human, but with a medieval twist. Interesting romance and the band of brother vampire warriors was fun. "

— Kristie, 1/26/2018" I have all the Black Dagger Brotherhood books. I have read them all twice and while I wait for the next book, I'm rereading them for a third time! Can't get enough! JR Watch as created such complete characrer with real flaws we can all relate to. This endears the characters to the readers that much more. "
— CT, 9/27/2017" I am loving series, the narrator does a wonderful job bring the characters to life. "

— Jen, 2/19/2014" This is by far, still my favorite of the BDB books. There are others that run a close second and J.R. Ward is still one of my favorite authors, so to put this one first is a real statement for me. She sucks you in from the first page and makes you continue to love Wrath and Beth well into the latest edition of this series. Well worth the time investment. WARNING - once you read this one, you will have to read them all!! Welcome to the brotherhood. "

— Rhonda, 1/26/2014" A great starter, my appetite is whet and ready for more. I appreciate the fact that Wrath isn't perfect and needs to work on some things and with the kingship over his head he does not seem arrogant to the point of foolish pride, he has actual fears and such. THE SEX IS HOT!!!! good stuff. Beth was kinda lethargic for me at first but the chemistry with her and Wrath adds a nice balance, her calmness with his intensity. Great book, awesome author, Recommended. "
