When it reaches zero, you die. #1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen sets her readers’ pulses racing once again in this relentless psychological thriller of a young woman caught in a maze of secrets and stalked by a merciless killer. The countdown begins the moment you open this riveting novel that only grows more electrifying as the pages turn, more exciting as time runs out. . . . “Don’t kill her. She’s no good to us dead.” These words haunt Jane MacGuire after a shocking attack shatters her world in an instant. Was it a random kidnapping attempt–or the countdown to something far more sinister? Who is after her–and what do they want so badly they’ll kill anyone in their way? That’s what Jane is determined to find out, without the help of the police, the FBI, or her adoptive parents, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan and her husband, Joe Quinn, of the Atlanta PD–because whoever is after her won’t hesitate to hurt those she loves the most. Now Jane will go on the run with the only man who may be more dangerous than those who are pursuing her. A smuggler, a con man, and who knew what else, Mark Trevor had his own mysterious reasons for wanting to keep Jane safe and out of the hands of a killer obsessed with a two-thousand-year-old mystery that could rock the modern-day world. Orphaned at an early age, Jane grew up the hard way, but she was given a new life, a loving family, and a chance to pursue her interest in one of the greatest archaeological finds ever unearthed. Now someone was trying to destroy that new life before it could even get started. The past is returning with the kind of vengeance that knows no mercy. The countdown has already begun, and it’s approaching zero faster than anyone thinks.

"I was disappointed in the last Johansen book, but wasn't disappointed in this one. An Eve Duncan-tale but her and Joe take a back seat to their adopted, college daughter, Jane. Fast-paced, sometimes "Indiana Jonesy" but with enough twists and turns in the plot to keep me interested! "
— Cindy (4 out of 5 stars)
" This was okay but it seemed a bit long to reach the end. And then we still have an unsolved mystery. Guess that will pick up in the next book. "
— Daelith, 1/25/2014" not one of my favorites. "
— Diana, 1/12/2014" ugh this COULD have been so good. hot romance. life on the edge. then no, it turns into a terrorist plot and a really sad, unnecessary death (mike) to start. Worse, the romance NEVER DEVELOPED. there is only one instance in the whole book that mentions them ever getting together, and with no detail. the terrorist plot was just ridiculous and it fell apart too easy. the crazy brain washing guy was barely developed and COULD have been interesting. it seemed there were too many bad guys and none of them were developed. i liked the twist of mario being actually a bad guy and the twist of jane being macduff's descendant and the gold actually belonging to her fam. so much more could have been done with that. maybe there's more books to this to explain better and further develop the relationship but i won't read it. "
— Amanda, 12/28/2013" Kind of odd about the Cira thing but she weaves it all together. "
— Jayme, 12/20/2013" I loved it! I really liked how Jane grew in this book and became the woamn she was with Trevor. It was a real intersting twist on things in the ending as to why Jane looked so much like Cira. A nice fairytale feel wrapped up in this book! "
— Rebecca, 12/20/2013" This is one compelling read that features Eve's daughter Jane into Scotland for protection. It's a good sequel from Blind Alley. Lots of suspense and good action and romance. "
— Kristen, 12/17/2013" I think it would help if you had read a previous one. A lot was assumeded from a previous book which I had not read. it made keeping up sometimes hard. "
— Scott, 12/13/2013" A story about Jane! These books about Eve Duncan are such great thrillers for me. The romance entwined in the mystery is great for me. I like Ms. Johansen's Eve Duncan series. "
— ♆, 10/27/2013" Don't think this was the best book in the series. The ending was a disappointment, not sure there really was an ending. "
— Wilma, 10/20/2013" Very Good; Continuing character: Eve Duncan; Jane MacGuire takes center stage in this continuation of Blind Alley, as the mystery around ancient treasure and the murder and mayhem a variety of players are using to get their hands on it concludes "
— Joe, 10/12/2013" this is a good book.. scary but good! "
— Carrie, 10/12/2013" I completely enjoyed this book -- classic Johansen at her best "
— Pat, 6/26/2013" I really did like this one. Another installment of Eve Duncan featuring her adopted daughter, Jane. "
— Tabitha, 6/14/2013" It was an author I wasn't use to, yet her book did hook me and despite questioning some scenarios in the book I was left feeling content and happy with the novel as a whole. "
— Ez, 4/22/2013" As I said in a review of another book by this author, she is an excellent writer but I never became enthralled with this series. "
— Laurie, 3/10/2013" Stupidest book ever. I like the author but her Eve Duncan series is just terrible. "
— Milah, 1/31/2013" I really like this series. I have now completed all the books except the most recent release. I am on a waiting list for that. Love the character Eve. Must admit that I did not like that the last two books involved her "adopted" daughter more than her. Writers???? Who knows what way they go next? "
— Ihdamj, 10/25/2012" This was the second time I read this book. The "shocker" at the end was still a shock! "
— Kathy, 10/23/2012" Again Iris Johansen provides an entertaining plot with a lot of suspense. "
— Donna, 10/4/2012" Great book. Jane gets her first real appearance and focus in this one. "
— Lori, 9/21/2012" WOW! So far this has been my favorite book in the series. I love reading about a strong woman who can hold her own ground. This book has two woman who fit that description. Can't wait to see where Jane is taken next and I like Trevor too. "
— Christine, 8/18/2012" This continuation of Jane and Trevor's story was not as good as the last installation (The Search). It had some promising moments, but seemed to fall flat towards the end. "
— Brittany, 6/10/2012" Too much romance, not enough mystery, and too many unrealistic plot twists and turns. Sorry, Eve Duncan. You were brilliant at first, but your daughter annoys me, and you turned into a wimp. "
— Nicole, 6/9/2012" Totally awesome!!!! Keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat!! "
— Susan, 5/5/2012" How does this woman get published?????! "
— Idyllwilde, 11/19/2011" wasn't as fascinating as i expected it to be!!! Had too many characters(including necessary and unnecessary)coming in all at once. "
— Ebimoboere, 10/7/2011" It might well be the best of the Iris Johansen books that I've read so far, and believe me, if you like courage, determination, self-preservation, confidence, beauty and grace all in one heroine... go look for Johansen's JANE MAC'GUIRE!!! "
— Alexa, 7/26/2011" Not one of her better books, but still a good Iris thriller. I have actually read this one before, but couldn't remember what happened (which means for me it wasn't as great)....... "
— Brooke, 7/6/2011" Great mystery with unexpected ending. "
— Helen, 5/10/2011" These are just fun, quick reads. "
— Liz, 3/23/2011" As I said in a review of another book by this author, she is an excellent writer but I never became enthralled with this series. "
— Laurie, 3/2/2011" Stupidest book ever. I like the author but her Eve Duncan series is just terrible. "
— Milah, 2/12/2011" Excellent book about treasure buried by an ancient volcano in Italy - and a Scottish Laird and his castle in Scotland. "
— Jennifer, 2/10/2011" What can I say I really didn't enjoy this book, But I got through it, by the skin of my teeth. Just couldn't get into it. The end was the best. "
— Janet, 10/29/2010" not one of my favorites. "
— Diana, 10/25/2010" great continuation of Eve Duncan series. Jane is very strong and has grown up! "
— Bridget, 9/12/2010" I loved this boook majorly! "
— Heather, 7/8/2010" Great book, fast paced with characters being on the good and the bad side. It almost leaves you wondering if there will be a sequel. Very good, page turner, lots of fun. "
