From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Killer Dreams comes a terrifying new thriller that will leave you guessing–and gasping–till the final nerve-racking page. The suspense begins with a phone call and leads forensic sculptor Eve Duncan to the trail of a killer even killers fear to face. Eve Duncan has turned down the job twice already. Her skill and devotion in identifying murder victims and helping bring their killers to justice may be world-renowned. But Eve works exclusively for law enforcement and the families of the innocent, and the man on the other end of the phone is many things–none of them law-abiding or innocent. One of the world’s most wanted men, little is really known about Luis Montalvo except that he is extraordinarily dangerous and that he never takes no for an answer. Now he wants Eve’s help in the worst way. For he believes they have something in common–and he’s about to prove it with a grisly warning. Eve will leave everything and everyone behind, even the man she trusts and loves the most, to travel to the Colombian jungle to identify the skull he has recovered. She has agreed to this devil’s bargain to save an innocent family, but also for a reason she can’t admit to anyone. For the man in the jungle has promised to be able to give Eve what she wants most of all–the key to unlocking the darkest and most painful mystery of her past. But as she gets closer to identifying the skull, she finds herself caught between two ruthless killers with no way out. Now, with everything on the line, Eve Duncan must make the most chilling choice of all. And if she’s wrong…she’s dead.

"Great book, first one from Johansen that I've read. Disappointed that I did not realize there were several previous books in this series that I shoudl have read first. I am looking forward to the next in the series due out in March 08"
— Angie (4 out of 5 stars)
" When I saw Bob's review of Quinn, I knew I'd read one from the series, but had to start from the beginning to find which. The idea of skull reconstruction is dwelt on from the artistic viewpoint, rather than gruesome, but the author dwells on the heroine's angst and frustration, trying to escape in work. I preferred the action scenes, over worrying. Been too long to recall details, but I think there was a twist that the "bad guy" really had good and tragic motives. Eve is threatened to get her to decide the skull's identity, when she might have worked anyway. I retain an impression of a tense confined to a jungle compound setting and running and shooting. I may have disagreed if she was keeping secrets from good guy Joe. I know I have read other Johansen and would read more; I probably will not reread this; I do recommend if you like forensic mysteries. "
— Anne, 1/24/2014" I read this a few years ago and I still love it! "
— Maribel, 1/22/2014" I'm in an Iris Johansen mood right now. This is another in her Eve Dunvan series. I have to get caught up on the lasst 3 she's written! "
— Debby, 1/16/2014" non-christian suspense fiction. great book. easy to read. the first Ive read of hers. borrowed from a co-worker who borrowed from another co-worker. we plan to read them all in order, no more of this jumping around stuff. "
— Amy, 1/15/2014" Another Eve Duncan thriller. A well written page turner with a touch of the "other-world" included. A fun read! "
— Donna, 1/1/2014" This could have been a good book. The main story line was pretty good. However, it was so corny and full of absurdities that it ruined the whole book for me. Don't waste your time. "
— Jennifer, 12/22/2013" Another great book in the Eve Duncan series! "
— Bree, 12/20/2013" Middle of Eve Duncan series - forensic sculptor. "
— Barbara, 12/16/2013" Predictable. I was very disappointed in this book. I thought the predictability was particularly lame since I have liked all of the books I have read by her in the past. "
— Danielle, 12/14/2013" Eve's character is getting predictable, but in the end the storyline took on a great twist! "
— Amy, 11/23/2013" This was a typical Iris Johansen book. Most of her plots lately have been very similar, especially the books with Eve Duncan as the main character. "
— Tommy, 11/22/2013" love all eve books "
— Jacquie, 11/14/2013" This was ok. The Eve Duncan series are starting to all seem the same to me. "
— Lynlee4, 8/25/2013" I read this, but it was not as interesting as I had hoped. Tenkie said she is a good author...I may try one more to see if this was just not a good book. "
— Betty, 8/7/2013" Good book overall "
— Anita, 7/18/2013" I didn't bother finishing this one- the characters were annoying & the plot was ridiculous. "
— Cathy, 6/27/2013" I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept moving and had many turns along the way that kept me interested. "
— Diane, 6/23/2013" Really quick mindless read. Pretty intense story but not at all belivable. Good for a long flight. "
— Michael, 1/12/2013" Very good - a quick read - "
— Gloria, 11/3/2012" Wasn't my favorite of hers..but still a good thriller "
— Stefanie, 10/16/2012" A huge disappointment. I've read Johansen's books in the past, but now they seem more like a flat formula than a new story. The characters are undeveloped, the villian is unneccessarily dispicable-- I don't care if he's supposed to be the villan, some things, you just don't want to know. "
— Michelle, 4/3/2012" Character portrayals left me unsettled. Says more about me than the author of the book, I think. "
— Rich, 10/21/2011" Iris johansen Is An Awesome Writer Lover her Style She Will Keep you On The Edge Of Your Seat "
— Sheila, 7/7/2011" Stalemate is very different from the other novels starring Eve Duncan, I really enjoyed the change! "
— Brittany, 5/12/2011" This was the first book I read by this author. I wasn't too impressed. The story seemed contrived to me and written in a format, pretty predictable for me. I did like that the protagonist was a forensic sculptor and I liked learning about her way of doing that. "
— Cathie, 5/3/2011" a good "auto" read in the car....
"
— Jean, 4/14/2011" I haven't read this book in well over a year, but I remember it being one of my favorites! It was suspenseful, dark and very interesting. I have recommended it to a few of my friends and have gotten good feed back from them on it! "
— Elle, 4/8/2011" Remind me to quit reading this series. They were pretty good in the beginning----not so much now. "
— Barbara, 3/31/2011" Every time I read an Eve Duncan thriller I tend to being it frustrated. I always tell myself if she doesn't find Bonnie this time I'm not reading any more in this series. Then I read a few chapters in and I'm completely hooked. As I turn the last page I can't wait for the next book in the series! "
— Christine, 2/26/2011" this story was okay but the lady the book is about is the most egotistical, selfserving witch i have ever read she deservered to be shot---and then the story ended with a deffinate sequal --leave me out "
— Mom, 1/18/2011" My least favorite of the series so far, but still a good book! "
— Jason, 11/20/2010" I like Iris Johansen but she's getting predictable. Her main character, Eve Duncan, is getting to be somewhat annoying in her relationships. But, I'm sure I'll still read more. "
— Marilyn, 10/10/2010" Just terrific. Can't wait to read Pandora's Daughter "
— Cynthia, 9/26/2010" Nice little mystery bur not especially enthralling. Read it on the boat though...so that is good! "
— Sally, 9/6/2010" Enjoyable, earlier Eve Duncan novel.

If I had anything to complain about it would just be that she had to have 2 men to save her. "
— Cheryl, 8/25/2010" Iris johansen Is An Awesome Writer Lover her Style She Will Keep you On The Edge Of Your Seat "
