To save the lives of her friends, Rachel did the unthinkable: she willingly trafficked in forbidden demon magic. And now her sins are coming home to haunt her.

As Rachel searches for the truth behind a terrifying murder, an even greater menace threatens, for the demon Algaliarept will stop at nothing to claim her, and the discovery of a shocking family secret throws Rachel's entire life into question. If she is ever to live free, Rachel must first walk willingly into the demonic ever-after in search of long-lost ancient knowledge.

But when you dance with demons, you lay your soul on the line . . . and there are some lines that should never be crossed.

"I read this book a year or so ago (this is one of my favorite series). Since the 7th is coming out I thought I would reacquaint myself with the story line and re-read this one. When I saw it at the library for the IPOD it was an extra special treat because I haven't listened to this one before. It was a good audio. This is a series that you really want to start at the beginning to understand the nuances. Rachel risks her self not knowing if Al will kill her or enslave her (Al is a demon) to save Trent (her nemisis for several books now). Why? Personal value. I like the depth to Rachel, she is a complex character with major issues that weigh on her mind and soul. And I like that even though the odds are not good to her well being, she chooses the decision that she will never be thanked for, but that she will be able to look in the mirror for choosing."

Quotes

  • “Rachel boldly tackles every challenge amid a cascade of plot twists that will delight Harrison’s fans”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Harrison’s stories are dark and brooding, yet they’re told in a comedic voice that will appeal to a wide range of listeners. Narrator Gigi Bermingham is the perfect choice to portray Rachel. Her down-to-earth voice is the ideal medium for Harrison’s imaginative world. Bermingham has the ability to move listeners with the emotions, especially the terror, of the story. This is a solid performance from a gifted performer.”

    — AudioFile
  • “Plenty of action, especially in the novel’s last half when Rachel must use her magical skills and her intellect to extricate herself from yet another impossible situation. This is the strongest entry in the series so far, and based on the loose ends left at the book’s conclusion, there’s more of Rachel’s story left to tell. Highly recommended.”

    — Library Journal
  • “Harrison makes Rachel’s conflicts real and poignant without turning them into melodramatic slush…Harrison devotees should find ample emotional revelations and plot resolution, with enough loose ends to have them eagerly awaiting the next installment.”

    — Kirkus Reviews
  • “A fantastic ending to the first chapter of Rachel Morgan’s story. As usual, she’s a compelling and interestingly conflicted character who can’t seem to get into just a little bit of trouble. Series fans will have a hard time putting the book down as Rachel plummets headlong into what initially appears to be disaster but which just may be her salvation. Rachel’s future looks bright, indeed, and luckily for readers, this isn’t the last book.”

" For awhile this series jumped the shark, but now it is back on track and Rachel is kicking butt. The writing is again interesting and fast paced, and the characters aren't wallowing in their own misery. I'll continue to buy and read this series based on the quality of this novel. Good thing, I was almost ready to resign this series to the level of "screwed the pooch" and drop it. "

" This is looking to be the best book of the series yet. Lots of interactions with demons and trips to the ever-after. It occurs to me that this would make a terrific model for a tv series. But the cgi would cost so much they probably couldn't afford decent actors or writers, sigh. "
