After mating with Adam Hauptman, reigning Alpha of the local werewolves, Mercy Thompson's world is radically different. She has stepped in as a mother to Adam's daughter Jesse and this role has brought her a calm and peace that she has long needed. However, her life is still lived on the edge with this pack, for unexpectedly, a minor accident, which at first seems ordinary, is about to change her world again.
Indeed, a traffic incident takes Jesse and Mercy out of the pack's reach for the first time. Adam is kidnapped and the only message Mercy receives through her psychic mating bond to Adam, is that he is full of rage and pain.
Suspicious that this abduction may be related to the drama between the werewolves and the public who is hesitant to accept them, Mercy knows Adam could be in very real danger. Alone and and facing powers with many resources, Mercy might have to reach out to new allies from the most unlikely places.

"Good book but lacks the punch of some of the other books in the series. I can't put my finger on what it is but it was just a bit lacking for me. "
