If you’re lucky, you live to fight another day.

In a futuristic urban wasteland, evil Overlords have decreed that no human shall live a day past their fourteenth birthday. On that Sad Birthday, the children of the Dorms are taken to the Meat Factory, where they will be made into creatures whose sole purpose is to kill.

The mysterious Shade—once a man but now more like the machines he fights—recruits the few teenagers who escape into a secret resistance force. With luck, cunning, and skill, four of Shade’s children come closer than the others to discovering the source of the Overlords’ power—and the key to their downfall. But the closer they get, the more ruthless Shade seems to become.

Quotes & Awards

  • “This pitch-dark, postapocalyptic thriller will keep you reading and wild-eyed. Fast, brutal, and brilliant.”

Scott Westerfeld, New York Times bestselling author of Uglies

  • “[Nix] blends suspense, action, and high emotion in this excellent, fast-moving science fiction story.”

    Amazon.com, editorial review

  • “Through a fast-paced combination of narrative, transcripts, chilling statistical reports, and shifting points of view, Nix depicts a chilling future…Nix’s taut narrative never lets go of the reader, and the characters are compelling, their frailties emphasizing their humanity in sharp contrast to the Overlords’. His grim vision of the future is laced with hope, an element noticeably missing from much of today’s young adult literature, and it is this hope that sustains the reader through the nail-biting plot to the satisfying conclusion.”

  • “The alternate world [Nix] creates is amply imagined and the twists and turns of the action-filled plot compelling.”

    Publishers Weekly

  • “Complex, immersive science fiction needs narrators who can keep the stories clear for listeners. Here, Charles Carroll’s level tone and steady, thoughtful pacing will definitely help listeners stay on top of the book’s events and characters…He excels at portraying the subtle differences between the four young main characters and at enlivening the ‘archive’ sections of the text: He actually makes listening to several pages of lists enjoyable!”

  • “Fast-paced, exciting…Straight narrative chapters alternate with files from Shade’s increasingly unbalanced memory, a device that works well in this context. A well-written and engaging book.”

    School Library Journal

  • “A slick, dark, engrossing novel. Grim, unusual, and fascinating.”

    Horn Book Magazine

  • “All the essential ingredients are here…The story is tense and compelling.”

    Children’s Literature

  • “Combines plenty of comic-book action in a sci-fi setting to produce an exciting read…Nix deftly weaves in a few surprising plot twists…The author pulls off a happy ending without straining credibility largely through the characters’ sacrifice—a satisfying end to an action-adventure with uncommon appeal outside the genre.”
