With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover, Eric Northman, and his "child" Pam are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot-which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up once again in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human-and that there is a new queen on the board

"I had read about half way through this book and then put it aside as I borrowed a mountain of books from the library and wanted to read and return those. Even though it was a couple months before I got back to this book I wasn't lost. Charlaine's writing style is easy to figure out what was missed. Really you can pick up any of her books in the series and have an idea about what was in the books before them. It's not repetitive though which many writers do and it annoys me. A lot of loose ends were tied in the end of this book. Finally that annoying blood bond with Eric is gone and Good riddance Sandra Pelt! I look foreword to the adventures in the next book :)"

“Doesn’t disappoint fans of the southern, mind-reading belle who gets mixed up in the world of vampires and magical creatures…It’s the perfect poolside read.”
— Kansas City Star“This was a fast-paced and entertaining read that had me glued to my seat and turning those pages to see just who would show up and what was going to happen next.”
— Fresh Fiction“Seamlessly mixes sensuality, violence, and humor as readers experience the people of small-town Louisiana through Sookie’s eyes.”
— Boulder Weekly" As I listen to this series the characters are developing more and more. Very enjoyable and easy listening. "
— jreed, 11/3/2023" 3 1/2 stars. Kind of slower paced than most of the others. Nothing much of significance happened in this one to any of the main characters. The only character that I felt got more developed this time was Pam, who I always enjoy reading about. As for the rest... there were a surprising lot of them that acted out of character, and a few resolutions that felt unnatural (like the solution for Merlotte's slow business -- that wasn't a solution!). Not my favorite, but I'm still excited to be almost caught up with this series. I'll be adding more by Harris to my to-read pile in the future. "
— Kevin, 2/17/2014" I was avoiding this book because I didn't enjoy the last one that much, but this one was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the action and all of the new twists and turns. I can't wait to read the new one. "
— Amber, 2/17/2014" your basic formula book ala Janet Evanovich "
— Sherry, 2/16/2014" Yet again another vampire story, but like no other! Extrememly sexy and entertaining! Only complaint is that the books seem a little short, but maybe because I couldn't put them down! All books in this series are just as good as the one before. Next one comes out May 1, 2012! "
