Plot Summary

Sookie Stackhouse has not had an easy time, as of late. After being tortured relentlessly by the sadistic fairies Lochlan and Neave, she has been left physically and emotionally exhausted. Although she's settled in comfortably with Eric, her viking vampire boyfriend, things are still tough. At least she's got her brother, who seems to have settled down with his girlfriend Michele well enough as well.

Things aren't as peachy-keen as they seem, though. When Eric's maker shows up with Alecksi Romanov, famed son of the last Czar of Russia, things start to get complicated, and fast. Alecksi is crazy, unhinged, perhaps moreso even than Eric, in his younger days, and as for Eric? Well, despite what his maker says, he wants nothing to do with the boy.

And then there's Sookie's cousin, Hadley, who is every bit as telepathic as her, and far more untrained and dangerous. Will she be able to teach him to reel in his Fae abilities? Will Eric be able to get a handle on Alecksi before he snaps and kills everyone? Only time will tell.

Charlaine Harris is most well-known by her Sookie Stackhouse series of novels set in Bon Temps, Louisiana. She herself was raised along the Mississippi River Delta, and uses that setting as a primary source for much of her story material. She has also written several other series, mostly about paranormal events or ghosts. She lives in Southern Arkansas with her husband and three children, and has gone on to help launch a successful TV series (true blood) based on the Sookie Stackhouse series of novels.

Dead In the Family is a thrilling adventure sure to please any fan of paranormal ghost adventures.

"Meh, I'm starting to get really bored. I am almost caught up though! I do love the interactions with Eric and Sookie and I really do think they love each other. Makes me wonder if Bill will get his happily ever after."

— Marcy (4 out of 5 stars)

Publisher Summary

Charlaine Harris delivers the 10th novel in her #1 New York Times best-selling Sookie Stackhouse series, which has been adapted into the smash hit television program True Blood. Finally settled with Viking vampire Eric, Sookie finds normalcy just as chaos surrounds her. Sookie's former lover Bill, her boss Sam, and even Eric are struggling with family problems. Then things get really interesting when the werewolves tell Sookie an ominous presence is lurking. After enduring torture and the loss of loved ones during the brief but deadly Faery War, Sookie Stackhouse is hurt and she's angry. Just about the only bright spot in her life is the love she thinks she feels for vampire Eric Northman. But he's under scrutiny by the new Vampire King because of their relationship. And as the political implications of the Shifters coming out are beginning to be felt, Sookie's connection to the Shreveport pack draws her into the debate. Worst of all, though the door to Faery has been closed, there are still some Fae on the human side-and one of them is angry at Sookie. Very, very angry...

Quotes

  • “The normal world of barbecues and malls coexists with the secret one of werewolves, witches, and fairies in Harris’ cocktail of domestic drama and supernatural adventure.”

    — Daily Mail (London)
  • “Entertaining…The exploration of family in its many human and undead variations is intriguing, and Harris delivers her usual mix of eccentric characters and engaging subplots.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Sookie is the literary equivalent of TVs Buffy and is a far superior heroine to Twilight’s pushover, Bella. This tenth outing tackles orgasmic Viking sexcapades, hair-curling violence, and romance that doesn’t make you heave. A gripping read.”
