National bestselling author Carolyn Hart presents an original new novel about a woman with a curious ability that drops her headfirst into a world of intrigue and murder…

Ever since the death of her fiancé, Nela Farley has found herself plagued by a sixth sense: she understands the thoughts of cats when she looks into their eyes. Nela knows that what she’s experiencing is completely irrational and tries to convince herself that she is simply transferring her own thoughts that she doesn’t want to face.

When her adventurous sister, Chloe, goes on a trip and asks for a favor, Nela welcomes the distraction and agrees to substitute at Chloe’s job at a charitable foundation. Chloe has arranged a place for her sister to stay, but when Nela shows up, she encounters the previous tenant’s cat and gets a flash of thought:

Dead...dead and gone...She loved me...board rolled on the second step...

Nela wants to ignore what the cat saw, but the idea that the death of former tenant Marian Grant wasn’t an accident is something she can’t ignore. As Nela begins to do some research into Marian’s life, strange events begin to occur, all seeming to lead back to the Haklo Foundation. But when a detective becomes suspicious of Nela’s sister and a second murder occurs, Nela realizes she’ll have to make the most of her unwanted ability to figure out what’s really going on—before she meets her own untimely end.

" I really, really enjoyed this book and the character reminded me of a young Henrie O., albeit one with a special talent. Kudos for that! I have to say this book left me wanting more and I hope the author writes a sequel or 10. "

" Great book! Hope to see more of Nela and Jugs! "

" Good book. Nicely written mystery. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Melissa | 1/27/2014

" Not usually a fan of animal mysteries, but in this case the cat doesn't actually talk. Try it. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Susan | 1/15/2014

" This was a good mystery with a little bit of weird. The heroine can hear the thoughts of cats around her. She must solve a mystery without letting anyone know it was the cat who gave her the clues. Really fast read and enjoyable from start to finish. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Regan | 12/3/2013

" Interesting book, or at least her writing voice. If it were going to be made into a movie I'd say it should be black and white and directed by someone with a perspective like Hitchcock's. I wanted to see more of Jugs the cat.....and that's just me and loving to see cats in books. "

" I enjoyed this. It did take me a bit to get into it but as I worked my way through it, I began to really enjoy this. Would like to see what would happen with a sequel. "

" Some silly premises, but an enjoyable read. Made me want to get a cat more than the cat information books did. "

" Pretty tightly-woven, nicely done! It says #1 in a series, but since this book is so new, there aren't any others around just yet. I liked it--I can't wait to see the next one! "

" First book in this new series featuring Nela Farley. It was a fun, quick read and I look forward to more of this character. It was the first book I've read by Carolyn Hart--will have to try more of her books. "
