She came in the rain. Alone. On a bicycle. Annie and Max Darling are completely unprepared when the arrival of a mysterious young woman shocks their sea island and stirs up more than just gossip. It turns out that Iris, the beautiful stranger, is a former resident of Broward's Rock. Her arrival throws the normally happy town into a downward spiral that pits neighbor against neighbor. Things take a turn for the worse when Annie befriends Iris and invites her to attend the Darlings' party at the pavilion where Death is the uninvited guest. Suddenly, Max and Annie find themselves in the middle of a fight they don't understand and at the mercy of an unknown assailant who's trying to kill them—and all they know is that it is one of their friends.

"I had my doubts about this book. It is, after all, about a darling couple named Darling. Seems that she owns a book store in a small town on a small island that focuses on mysteries. She's native to the community and returned with her darling husband to live and love. Seems also that death practically comes to her door and takes up residence. It all sounds too trite and contrived. Well, it is all that and very fun and interesting. The mystery continues throughout the book with some guesses about the villan but no real clear leads. Fast, good read that was fun and had my brain working through most of the book. I'll read another even if it's not a free Nook book."

" A fun book to read - I wasn't sure who the killer was until the very end. "
— Nancy, 2/18/2014" I liked this book enough that I will look for others in the series. I got it as a free book, and so I haven't read any of the others in the series which put me at a bit of disadvantage. I like the concept of the bookstore that she owns and the references to other mystery writers and their books. "
— Denise, 2/13/2014" I don't know why I always think I have to finish every book I start! This story is sort of a semi-grown up Nancy Drew. Characters seem shallow and sketchy. By the time I find out who did it I hope I feel as if I know some of the key players. It does flow and some descriptions are really good but there are much better stories out there. I have to rethink Nook's free fridays. "
— Marylynn, 2/6/2014" It has been a few years since I last visited Annie and Max...not sure why. I have read Hart's other series too, but more recently. I enjoyed getting back with the Darlings; good story, no heroes to stupid to live, no heroes thinking they would be better able to solve the crime than the local PD. A good, pleasant summer read. "
— Janet, 2/5/2014" It was free on the nook. I was developing a respiratory infection. There were lots of characters and for some reason I couldn't keep them straight. My frequent naps didn't help, but I can't say for sure that they were all caused by illness, as the book never grabbed me. Kept looking at page # to see how soon it would all be wrapped up. "
— Julie, 1/29/2014" I like the Annie and Max but all the stories are beginning to sound the same. "
— Kaye, 1/21/2014" When Annie Darling volunteers to help at a friend's vacation cabins, she meets Iris, a native of Broward's Rock who has been away for many years. Iris fled the island after the deaths of two high school classmates, twins, and went through prolonged periods of substance abuse and homelessness. Now, clean and sober, she wants to redress a long-past mistake. But when Iris dies, Annie--who had the opportunity to learn about her life--becomes number one target for a murderer. "
— Susan, 1/17/2014" Stayed up until 3:00 a.m. to finish. I didn't know "who-dun-it" till the very end when it was revealed. I love this series and this book didn't let me down. "
— Denise, 1/7/2014" My first Death on Demand book. I really liked the premise, the characters, and the writing style. However, I guessed the murderer's identity in the beginning of the book. I don't want my mysteries to be that easy for me to solve. I will try another though. "
— Pam, 11/25/2013" it was an okay mystery- liked the story line going along- but the ending was just kind of blah. "
— Coral, 10/18/2013" Fun "cozy" mystery in a good series "
— Joanne, 8/15/2013" A good book, not wonderful but intriguing. I believe it would help to have read the previous novels, as there were allusions to some things that I am almost positive were covered in previous novels and helped give some background to the characters. "
— Brittany, 7/2/2013" A good murder mystery. Had trouble at first keeping up with the characters. "
— Catherine, 4/18/2013" This book starts out slow and muddled with too many characters. It's very wordy and predictable. There wasn't any character I was particularly drawn to. I got this book as a free title from BN, so I read it. It's unlikely that I'll purchase any other books from this author. "
— Stephanie, 4/5/2013" One cliche after another...I swear she repeats entire sentences. Worthless. Read Laura Lippman's And When She Was Good for well written suspense from a woman's point-of-view. "
— Mark, 1/27/2013" To wordy, To much information. "
— Charlie, 1/10/2013" Another Annie/Max Darling murder mystery. There is more emphasis on the preciousness of love and relationships and we should treasure those we love. "
— Lizpeveto, 12/9/2012" This is an easy read but has toomany similar characters to keep straight easily. "
— Lori, 11/26/2012" Mnr Bk Annie and Max not moved into their new house, temp living at Nighingale Courts where they met Iris a 28 yr old woman who had run away 10 yrs ago from her grandmother home and drug issue sat high school "

— Sheila, 9/23/2012" a surprising ending lots of twists and turns "
— Nina, 5/7/2012" Quick read, Free Friday Nook Book. "

— Matt, 10/19/2011" I always enjoy Carolyn Hart's mysteries. They are a fun read. "
— Kristen, 10/8/2011" There were so many characters in this book that I couldn't keep up with who was with who or why they would want to kill Joclyn or Iris. "
— Dee, 5/31/2011" I really enjoyed this one. It was refreshing to have wholesome characters - helpful, thoughtful, kind. I didn't figure it out till nearly the end either. I would love to visit the main character's book store. If you need lists of mysteries to read, you'll find them here. "
— Kaye, 4/18/2011" A good murder mystery. Had trouble at first keeping up with the characters. "
— Catherine, 1/23/2011" A new mystery series for me... very enjoyable as an audio book. Great narrator! I was able to solve the mystery. I'm not sure whether that's because I'm becoming used to the mystery format or because it was easy to solve in this book. In any event, a good listen! "
— Barbara, 10/23/2010" I think I'd like this series a lot more if a good editor took away some of the repetition. I tend to get bored when there's a lot of that.

Even so, I did stick it out until the end because I really wasn't sure about the murderer. "
— Grey853, 7/15/2010" The latest book in the Death on Demand series. Nothing to get excited about, but a good book, on par with the rest of the series. "
— Denise, 7/5/2010" Another Annie/Max Darling murder mystery. There is more emphasis on the preciousness of love and relationships and we should treasure those we love. "
— Lizpeveto, 4/27/2010" Carolyn Hart's books are comfortable & cozy. A great read on a 'low' day. Dare to Die did not disappoint. Familar characters, new players & always a twist. Easy read. "
— Kathrine, 4/27/2010" Tis my 1st Caroyln Hart book - tis alright. I will read another one her books to give her stuff another chance. "
— Kemi, 4/14/2010" A woman returns to our sleuth's island after a long absence and turns up dead. Could her murder be connected to the death of another classmate right before she left? This book is a solid story, but it has nothing special to help it stand out from the crowd. "
— Laren, 10/31/2009" I really enjoyed this book. Loved the character, and the Death on Demand bookstore. Felt like I was on the island. "
— Sierra, 10/21/2009" Mnr Bk Annie and Max not moved into their new house, temp living at Nighingale Courts where they met Iris a 28 yr old woman who had run away 10 yrs ago from her grandmother home and drug issue sat high school "
