Publisher Description

It was one of Eve Dallas’s earliest takedowns, back in her uniform days. A monster named Isaac McQueen had been abducting young victims and leaving them scarred in both mind and body. Thanks to Eve, he wound up where he belonged, removed from civilized society in Rikers. But he’s not behind bars anymore.

After his escape, McQueen has two things in mind. One is to take up where he left off, preying on the young and innocent—when necessary, with the help of a female partner all too willing to be manipulated and to aid and abet his crimes. His other goal: to get revenge on the woman who stopped him all those years ago, now a high-profile lieutenant in the NYPSD and married to one of the city’s richest men.

Commanding Eve’s attention with a chilling and brazen crime, McQueen sets off the chase—forcing Eve down a road marked with blood and tears, a road that eventually leads southwest to Dallas, Texas, the home Eve fled long ago. And each new twist brings her closer to the harrowing memory of when she wasn’t a hardened detective but a vulnerable girl just like McQueen’s innocent prey. As her husband, Roarke, tries to rescue her from the nightmares that claw at her mind, and her partner, Peabody, doggedly works to support her, Eve must confront—and call upon—the darkest parts of her own soul in order to survive.

"I think this might be the first book in the series that doesn't have "in death" in the title, but it does work well for the story. Eve is headed back to Dallas after being challenged by an escaped convict she put away when she was a rookie and he wants revenge. Eve has to face more demons from her past while racing against the clock to save the victims. Most of the normal supporting cast have fairly small appearances since most of the book takes place in Dallas, but you get to know some new cops to fill in. As always, Robb excels at giving even minor character personality enough to become vested in them."

" This book was so emotional for the reader! The story line is great, the history for Eve Dallas; almost painful to hear. My favorite so far! "

" Four and a half stars for this one. I'd have given it five but at one point in the book I knew exactly where it was headed -- I like to be surprised and a great book would do that for me. This is definitely one of the best Eve Dallas books so far and I hope that I never get tired of reading about her & Roarke. "

" This episode is odd in more than the title that is a departure from the norm. The main characters are off stage except for Dallas and hunky hubby, Rourke. The ongoing struggle Eve has with her childhood is essentially addressed and concluded. It was well done although I kept wanting to finish. Not a good sign for an engrossing read, is it? Sigh. I like the 'In Death' series and I like this author both as JD Robb and as Nora Roberts; I am having trouble putting my finger on why this latest installment is unsatisfying. Perhaps it is the change of venue (Dallas) or maybe it is the lack of supporting characters. It might also be the lack of secondary story line which adds to the texture of other novels. That's it; okay is the best I can say. "

" An interesting installment in that Eve was away from most of her primary support group for the bulk of the book. I just wish Nora would not use "anal" as an abbreviation for "analysis." It kept pulling me out of the story. I'm sure it works fine in audiobook form, but not as the written word. "
