Everyone thinks A. J. Sutherland is crazy to buy a rogue stallion that no rider or trainer has been able to tame. But if anybody has the hustle to make something out of that hell-raiser, it’s A. J. She can’t do it alone, however, so she goes after the great Devlin McCloud, an equestrian legend with a bad leg—and a worse attitude.
Devlin recognizes a fighter when he sees one—and that horse isn’t a wallflower, either. Before he knows it, he’s got a wild stallion in his empty stable and a hotheaded, heavenly-bodied rider sleeping on his couch. But can he get all three of them through the championship in one piece? This passion he’s found with his rider is compromising training—and at this level of competition, any distraction is not just unprofessional but downright deadly....

"I am so glad that they released the first of J.R. Ward's books. I loved her first book. As soon as I realized that she wrote a book about horses I ran out an got it and I wasn't disappointed. Devlin was a great leading man. I like that his injury wasn't an issue after the start of the book. I think it would have taken the story in a different direction if they would have made it more of an issue. Even though A.J. was ridiculously stubborn, I thought she was a great character. I loved how she handled Sabbath and even thought Sabbath himself was a great character. It was great seeing him blossom with some genital handling. The end seemed a little rushed, but overall I thought is was a great first book."

" J.R. Ward's first novel. Liked the characters, well-researched horse-jumping background, good romance, but... found the last 70 pages a bit painful when A.J. kept lying to Devlin. Wanted to shake her. "
— Nicole, 2/20/2014" This was a nice first publish by Jessica Bird (a/k/a JR Ward a/k/a The Warden). If I didn't know that she had gone on to do bigger and better things I would say this was a very sweet read (and it is). I started reading in the middle of her Bird books with From the First and they do get better as they go along. There are definitely better books after this one but I definitely see the true Bird style in this and I am sure thankful that she continued on and grew and got better. I did like this book and I can now say I have read all of the Bird books published (I don't like the Ward genre I wish she would go back to these dramatic romances). "
— Missy, 2/12/2014" I'm not usually into horses or stories about horses but J.R. Ward is awesome! "
— Jennifer, 2/10/2014" Well, I think if I read the preface/acknowledgements correctly, this is J.R. Ward's first book (that has been re-released, I think). If so, that explains the weakness (if you can call it that) of the book. The promise of the brilliant writer that she is is most certainly there but the voice, that magical recipe that every writer craves, has not taken full form. Where her writing now is seamless and fluid, the writing in this book is not. Great story but less character development than we are used to. All in all, it's a nice first book with some great images of the horse show jumping crowd. You KNOW that story will have a happy ending because it does follow the formula. But, it was a 'good' happy ending. "
— Janne, 2/9/2014" This was a good read. I always enjoy JR Ward/Jessica Bird novels. "
— Melissa, 2/8/2014" I enjoyed this book and I liked that the story's conclusion wasn't as I predicted, but having read all of jessica bird/j.r. ward's other books, I could tell this was one of her first. Good humor tho and the characters were well written. J.R. Ward shows a lot more passion in her later writings, but I still give this book a definite thumbs up -worth the read rating. "
— Jamie, 1/29/2014" It was ok! totally different than her black Dagger series writing "
— Bobi, 1/17/2014" Book #158 for the 2010 52 Books in 52 Week Ravelry Challenge. "
— Nancy, 1/10/2014" I love J.R. Ward, so when I realized that she had several other novels written under another name I was thrilled. When I read the first I was sorely disappointed. Don't make the same mistake I did. "
— Anna, 12/27/2013" I read the book thinking it was written by J R Ward, I do not like it when I am mislead. Reading it, I wondered because I have read all of BDB, and this book was quite different. I did enjoy the book, but not the mis-representation. "
— Re, 12/25/2013" This one is the very first Jessica Bird (aka J.R. Ward) romances and it is exceptionally good for being an initial work. I enjoyed. :0) "
— Shelley, 12/13/2013" It's to the credit of JR Ward that I liked this book as much as I did. I don't like horses or animals much which is the focus of the story. It is interesting to see how JR Ward went from writing about romance among horse shows to writing about romantic violent vampires!! "
— Linds, 12/13/2013" A romance by J.R. Ward before she wrote the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. A fun nice romantic read. I would love it if she would write more, they are fun to read. "
— Gina, 10/7/2013" I enjoy books about this subject, having raised and shown horses in my teens. (not jumpers) I enjoyed The author's Foreword. "
— Gayle, 9/28/2013" I could not put this book down! It was so good! "
— Melissa, 7/25/2013" Nice little book whose main claim to fame, for me at least, is that it is written by J.R. Ward. "
— Alice, 5/16/2013" Im in the middle of it and so far it is great. "
— Christine, 3/26/2013" This book did not knock the socks off me. It was a standard predictable love story nothing original. Story was well researched and it flowed well good characters enjoyable but forgettable. "
— Ansu, 2/22/2013" so-so read. It was a bit slow and seemed to drag in parts. "
— Selena, 12/28/2012" Exceptional work for a first book in her short but sweet time with the standard romance genre, and then she catapults into the para romance genra with BDB. I'm looking forward to reading Heart of Gold when the reissue comes out in mass market. "
— Wendi, 10/25/2012" Her first published book. Very enjoyable. Loved their story and chemistry. "
— Deanna, 10/16/2012" Really more like 2 1/2 stars. Cheese fest. Seriously. It is obvious this is early in Ward's career. I still found it enjoyable fluff reading, for the most part, though. What can I say, I like horses! LOL "
