Publisher Description

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult comes a compelling and disturbing novel about a prep school teacher accused of rape by a group of young girls, the woman who stands by him, and the repercussions of the case in a small, New England town where the past is only a heartbeat away.

Love can redeem a man…but secrets and lies can condemn him.

A handsome stranger comes to the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls in hopes of burying his past: Once a teacher at a girls’ prep school, Jack St. Bride was destroyed when a student’s crush sparked a powder keg of accusation. Now, washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-Or-Diner, he slips quietly into his new routine, and Addie finds this unassuming man fitting easily inside her heart. But amid the rustic calm of Salem Falls, a quartet of teenage girls harbor dark secrets—and they maliciously target Jack with a shattering allegation. Now, at the center of a modern-day witch hunt, Jack is forced once again to proclaim his innocence: to a town searching for answers, to a justice system where truth becomes a slippery concept written in shades of gray, and to the woman who has come to love him.

"perhaps a squeek generous at four stars but I quite enjoyed this novel. The story slowly unravels with many sidesteps back into the past. Sometimes I am bothered by too many coincidences but otherwise it's an interesting read with good characters (and even three returning ones from the authors prvious novel). There's some creepy stuff in here, a few dark things hinted at in the novel and I'm not talking witchcraft."

" Good story, albeit a little predictable. (Totally saw the last sentence coming). I did like that Picoult deviated from her usual chapter by chapter change in point of view. "

" This story illustrates how easy it is to accuse someone of wrong-doing and have it ruin their life. It truly makes you wonder how many people have been falsely accused and who are in prison or were sent to death when they were not guilty. Again Jodi Picoult tackles a great issue. Would highly recommend this book. "

" It didn't take long to realize that this story is largely based on The Crucible and that's fine. She did an ok job with it and the story started out really good. Then it got really, really slow with flashbacks and side stories that seemed totally irrelevant, and a court case that only rehashes what we already knew. I was really frustrated at the ending for overtly hinting at something I had thought for much of the book but that was never otherwise hinted at. The audiobook was enjoyable because the reader is excellent, but I would recommend The Tenth Circle or My Sister's Keeper over this book any day. "

" A very disappointing Jodi Picoult novel. Definitely shows that this was one of her first. The characters, dialogue, and situations were all incredibly trite and two-dimensional. Just stick to reading The Crucible. It's much more concise, much more brilliant, and far less annoying. "

" Decent book, it was a little far-fetched and unbelievable at some points. I guess the point to take away is that some people are falsely accused and sentenced to jail or acquitted on a he-said she-said basis when it comes to sexual relationships, rape, and statuatory rape. "
