Cassel comes from a family of curse workers—people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they’re all criminals. Many become mobsters and con artists. But not Cassel. He hasn’t got magic, so he’s an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail—he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago. Cassel has carefully built up a façade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his façade starts to crumble when he finds himself sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He’s noticing other disturbing things too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him. As Cassel begins to suspect he’s part of a huge con game, he must unravel his past and his memories. To find out the truth, Cassel will have to outcon the conmen.

"Great YA urban fantasy with an interesting twist: the central character is male, if you can believe it. Author Holly black creates and interesting alternative reality in which magic workers live among normal humans facing prejudice and criminalization of their natural talents. Twists and turns of magic and memory weave a dark and disturbing tale around a genuinely likable (if not always admirable) central character."

" It's so good and Cassel is such a charmer! This book is romantic and mysterious, a PERFECT combination! If you love characters as funny and beautiful as Jace Lightwood (From the Mortal instruments) Read this book! The next book is called "Red Glove" This book is amazing!!! "
— Karina, 2/20/2014" Holly Black's best series yet. BY FAR. "
— Nina, 1/1/2014" Unique ! Brilliant !..Must Read !!! "
— Mr, 12/23/2013" The concept was interesting, but the book just had that "meh" feeling. Like, there wasn't a whole lot of exciting events. I wasn't bored exactly, but White Cat just felt flat. And I was confused by the whole "Lila being turned into a white cat". As the book progressed, I wasn't too surprised by anything that happened. I don't want to sound negative...There were definintley some good parts...it just wasn't "amazing". I ended up giving it 3 stars. "
— Elise, 12/18/2013" Amazing, so so amazing wish it could last forever. "
— Sarah, 11/10/2013" 5 stars for narration by Jesse Eisenberg "
— Shanah, 10/23/2013" I LOVED THIS BOOK! The story was amazing, and by the end I was very satisfied with this book. Excellent! "
— Alein, 10/19/2013" Very good first book in a series. Looking forward to the next one. "
— Brian, 9/29/2013" Exceedingly clever and well-done. I *really* want the next book. "
— Magda, 8/29/2013" This was much better then I expected, a lot more depth then anticipated. Also not so much a young adult book then I thought. I am looking forward to more of this :) "
— Ja, 5/4/2013" I didn't think it would be possible to love this book even more, but Jesse Eisenberg's narration is so delightfully spot-on that it actually makes the book better. "
— Nan, 3/9/2013" I'm actually quite surprised with how good I found this book! It was totally awesome! I had awful prejudice against Holly Black, guess I shouldn't have :) "
— Persephone, 12/22/2012" Very interesting; waiting for the 2nd one from the library. "
— Debra, 12/19/2012" I liked it. The world was intriguing and it was good to have a decent male POV YA book. "
— Bella, 9/28/2012" White Cat is amazing! I couldn't the book down! Cassel thinks that he is different and in the end is right! White Cat is full of mystery, cons, questions, criminals, and a white cat. "
— Kelly, 6/3/2012" wow! loved the main character. I'm such a sucker for unreliable narrators and bad boys. read in one day. "
— Pilars, 4/25/2012" It starts with a young man waking up from a nightmare. From a family full of workers, he knew he wasn't one. But he was wrong. You just got to read the book to find out more. It's really interesting. Totally different from Holly Black's other books but she doesn't fail for the change! "
— Brandy, 10/10/2011" Great book, never stopped wondering who was behind the plots. "
— Kel, 7/20/2011" I re-started reading this book since I had to finish other ones first. I started reading it on my way home from the book signing on May 3 in NYC( which by the way it was an amazing, awesome book signing day)..So far its very good... "
— Sandra, 5/22/2011" This is by far the coolest concept for a book I've read so far this year, and it is possibly just hands-down the best book. You will stay up late finishing this one. "
— Stephanie, 5/17/2011" I have been totally sucked into this world created by Holly Black. I've been talking it up to teens-it's a winner! "
— Diane, 5/17/2011" I think this is Holly Black's best YA title yet. With an interesting magical structure - curse workers who can perform various skills such as imparting emotions, altering memories, or breaking bones - in a modern day setting and a likable yet flawed hero. Enjoyable, quick read. "
