In every life there is a turning point … A moment so tremendous, so sharp and breathtaking, that one knows one’s life will never be the same. For Michael Stirling, London’s most infamous rake, that moment came the first time he laid eyes on Francesca Bridgerton. After a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing. Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca’s surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere thirty-six hours longer—the occasion of their meeting was, lamentably, a supper celebrating her imminent wedding to his cousin. But that was then … Now Michael is the earl and Francesca is free, but still she thinks of him as nothing other than her dear friend and confidant. Michael dares not speak to her of his love … until one dangerous night, when she steps innocently into his arms and passion proves stronger than even the most wicked of secrets …

"Enjoyed this book, it was the first Julia Quinn book I have read and she was recommended to me as an author by Catherine Anderson. It was sad that Michael had to wait so long for Francesca but everything worked out in the end. after re-reading the book, I got even more out of it. Francesca loses the husband she loved and Michael who has loved her since the moment he first saw her feels guilty because he loves her and more so now his cousin has died. I can't help feeling that there was something Francesca felt for Michael even before her husband died but because of guilt on both sides, the feelings one would have expected to flourish, couldn't until they had made peace with John. Finally Michael found a way to make it happen and thank goodness he did."

“Sultry-voiced narrator Rosalyn Landor takes on the sixth title in the Bridgertons series…Landor applies her considerable talents while holding together this lively, rather steamy Regency romance…Michael is portrayed as decidedly stiff and gruff—when he's not using his sexy voice to seduce Francesca. Landor voices Francesca as gracious, warm, and level-headed, in sharp contrast to the other husband-hunting girls of the Ton. Through it all, Landor's husky tones draw listeners into the passionate seduction scenes between Michael and Francesca.”
— AudioFile" As the Bridgerton series on Netflix had captured my attention, I really wanted to know Benedicts' story. The story was good, I like Julia Quinn's writing style. Though not my favorite of the stories, it did keep my interest throughout Rosalyn's reading of it. "
— Shari Luczanko, 8/6/2024" I really enjoy all her books and everytime I read a different book from the Bridgeton series I tell myself it can't get better, but then it does. "
— MB, 1/30/2023" I absolutely loved it, I have to say I think is my favorite book of hers! "
— Carolina, 2/10/2014" This book is one of my top 5 All Time favs, the hero is to die for and the story sizzles. The h hubby dies and his cousin who has always been in love with her spends the whole book seducing her.5* read "
— Kathy, 1/16/2014" When He Was Wicked (Bridgerton Family Series) by Julia Quinn (2004) "
— Brainorgan, 1/16/2014" This was my least favorite of all of the Brigerton Novels, and I was very disappointed at the end after finishing it. "
— Alexandra, 12/5/2013" Entertaining, but this time the scenes are hotter than any I've read so far. Other topics are much heavier too, like dealing with death and miscarriage. It was touching that love can overcome such huge barriers. "
— Alicia, 11/28/2013" OMG where can I get myself a Michael? I LOVED this book. It is such a nice change of pace when it is the HERO that is in love with and pines for the heroine for years. Which is the case here. Michael loved Francesca from the second he saw her. Too bad she was marrying his cousin. "
— Krishawna, 11/6/2013" I did not quite like Francesca's personality as much when compared to her siblings. So I did not enjoy this book as much as the rest of them. "
— Charanya, 10/23/2013" Slightly pornographic, but fun. "
— Christina, 10/21/2013" Oh MYYYY;)... "
— Ducha, 9/18/2013" Perhaps I didn't like this book compared to the others because Francesca mourned for the majority of the book. When He was Wicked didn't have the same sassy lead female that I appreciated in the other books of the series. "
— Sassykes, 11/21/2012" The two main characters weren't quite interesting enough to carry the book, especially considering they were alone together for the last 100 pages. "
— Laurie, 8/5/2012" Skipping the bad parts, a very cute love story. I have a soft spot for English romances. "
— Jaleen, 7/6/2012" Loved it. Francesca is a very different kind of character than you usually see. "
— Trace, 11/15/2011" My favorite one in the series. "
— Tishke, 5/8/2011" Despite all the pages I "skipped" I really enjoyed this book. It has restored my interest in JQ. "
— Jewel, 5/4/2011" This was another great addition to the Bridgerton Series! Review Coming! "
— Mommaseymour, 5/1/2011" I think this was my favorite in the series so far. As I read it, I began to mourn the fact that I must be close to the end of the series. I really have enjoyed it! Loved the characters, storyline and ties to the other books. "
— Shelly, 3/15/2011" probably my favorite of hers--I've passed on multiple copies "
