Enemies don't need to be alive to be deadly.
For Chess Putnam, finding herself near-fatally poisoned by a con psychic and then stopping a murderous ghost is just another day on the job. As an agent of the Church of Real Truth, Chess must expose those looking to profit from the world's unpleasant little poltergeist problem—humans filing false claims of hauntings—all while staving off any undead who really are looking for a kill. But Chess has been extra busy these days, coping with a new "celebrity" assignment while trying on her own time to help some desperate prostitutes.
Someone's taking out the hookers of Downside in the most gruesome way, and Chess is sure the rumors that it's the work of a ghost are way off base. But proving herself right means walking in the path of a maniac, not to mention standing between the two men in her life just as they—along with their ruthless employers—are moving closer to a catastrophic showdown. Someone is dealing in murder, sex, and the supernatural, and once again Chess finds herself right in the crossfire.
Stacia Kane's Chess Putnam series, a.k.a. Downside Ghosts, is a cross between Ghostbusters, and Escape from New York, with black magic, greasers, drugs, human sacrifices, and a black 1969 Chevelle. This is the second in the series afterUnholy Ghostsand again features Chess Putnam, a full-fledged, heavily tattooed witch.

"4.5. Enjoyed book 2 even more than book 1. The mystery in this plot was well done and kept me guessing the whole time. The ending is very open ended which was a little disappointing because I would have liked a little insight to which direction Chess would go. Oh well. What I really love about this series is how flawed the main character Chess is. I prefer this un-perfect heroine in all her pill-addict glory. It certainly puts her in some percarious situations which is refreshingly interesting. I highly recommend this series and can't wait to read the next one."

“Expect the unexpected. Kane delivers dark, sexy urban fantasy at its finest. I couldn’t put it down!”
— Karen Marie Moning, New York Times bestselling author“I LOVED it! I haven’t read an Urban Fantasy this good in quite a while.”
— bookchickcity.com" Took a few tries to get into it but it was worth it in the end. "
— Zanthera, 1/9/2014" Dark, gritty with a lot of shades of gray and angst. What's not to love? "
— K, 12/24/2013" Gut-wrenching and powerful. "
— Danielle, 11/24/2013" Better than the first IMO - I guess Chess came as a bit of a shock on first time exposure, now that I was already familiar with the characters I knew what to expect and enjoyed the book a lot. "
— Denise, 11/14/2013" This book drove me to distraction and just about broke my heart. It's powerful, awful and wonderful all at once. "
— Regan, 11/4/2013" Couldnt shut it down! One of the best UF series I have read in a long time. I love the sexual/romantic tension between Trouble and Chessie! "
— Whitneyk, 10/19/2013" I really loved these books - I had none of the problems with Chess that others seem to have, and Chess and Terrible = Awesome. "
— Jodi, 10/17/2013" So i thought no way was this going to get any better than it already was. Usually in a series there is that transition book that has no substance it's just there to link some event or characters together. But not with the Downside series. they just keep getting better and better "
— Stacie, 7/5/2013" I like how no one in the series appears to be perfect. They each have their own demons to battle as well as the others they have to take on in the book. Interested to see what door will be open and which ones will be closed. "
— Joanna, 3/13/2013" Not reading this book immeadiately after book 1 is a decision I will regret for a long time to come. Unholy Magic was awesome and I could not put it down. (Click here to read the rest of my review.) "

— Missy, 12/23/2011" Once again, brilliant book by Stacia Kane. Still couldn't put it down. Was totally on team Terrible for this one. "
— Sam, 6/26/2011" It was relatively enjoyable, but a book to borrow from the library rather than buy - I'm not sure I'd read it a second time. "
— Daisyjess, 5/15/2011" Freakin amazing.
She writes so well, and the development with the character, her relationship with Terrible, it was all just wow. "
— Fairyn, 5/10/2011" The last one-third of this book was insane!!! "
— Christen, 4/23/2011" What a great second book! The tension between Chess and Terrible is so good. I hope they work it out - they still care about each other very much. I hope Chess gets to tell Terrible her side of the story, I hope she drops Lex. On to book #3! "
— Cyndi, 4/16/2011" Honestly, I simply adore the Downside Ghosts series. There is nothing I can fault Kane with.

It is such an interesting type of writing she has. The speech patterns, the characters... I love it all. "
— Kat, 4/12/2011" If I could, I'd give this book six out of five stars. By far the best book I've read in years. "
— Dawn, 3/27/2011" I had some issues with the first one. The themes were taken to an extreme and because slightly annoying. They didn't let up in book two making it drag. "
— Tisha, 3/13/2011" This definitely got better in the second half and I ended up really liking it. I still want to smack her around for being so stupid half the time, but all in all a good read. "
