There is a thin line between alive and undead.
Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess' bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case. Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city's most notorious crime boss—and Chess' drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn't bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he's not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity. Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—and the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.
This third novel in the dark and sexy Chess Putnam series is perfect for fans of Kim Harrison and Patricia Briggs.

"Another awesome and emotional book. It had me very frustrated with Chess at times, yelling for her to make Terrible listen to her, but I guess one doesn't force Terrible into anything. Terrible. Oh, Terrible, I wanted to smack him for the snarkey things he told Chess. Was he hurting? Very much so. I just wanted to hold him and tell him to forgive. The ending of this book had me sniffling, and that's always a good thing for a good read in my opinion."

— Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author" I absolutely love this series...am crazy for it! Just finished this book, the third one in the series, and they just keep getting better and better. Looking forward to getting my, "Terrible" fix with the latest book released, "Sacrificial Magic". Stacia Kane is well on her way to becoming one of my favorite authors. Excellent book. "
— Stephanie, 2/19/2014" this series does not quit. I love it. I have loved every bit of it. "
— gigi, 1/20/2014" these books get better and better. i really liked how the characters' relationships developed (various characters not just the main 2 without giving anything away) throughout this book. i'm looking forward to the next one "

— Tem, 12/6/2013" Was awesome. I'm definitely going to miss not having a new one of these every month. Sad Face (but also Not-So Sad Face, for . . . um). "
— Andrea, 10/23/2013" This is book 3 of the 'Downside Ghosts' and is the best yet. If you are just getting started, read book 1 'Unholy Ghosts' first.....but read them! You won't be sorry! "
— Dc13, 9/26/2013" Absolutely amazing series, kept me enthralled until the last page...now all I have to do is wait for the next one...****big sigh**** "
— Lizzielvr, 9/17/2013" I really dig this kind of book. The language and the grittiness of it. Chess is a dynamic character, flawed and troubled. Yet you are so ready to jump in and have her back. Good book. "
— Brandi, 4/30/2013" This book is my favorite of the series, the growth of the charactors and how you have come to care for them and hope for them is great, it is not often a author can wrap me up in a story like this. I loved this book. "
— Colette, 4/25/2013" Speechless. So good. So emotionally satisfying. If you like your world gritty, love magic and want your romances real then you cant go past this series. "
— Evie, 2/11/2012" not sure how i feel about this book. "
— Tammy, 5/28/2011" For a protagonist that I am fairly ambivalent about, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and immediately upon finishing had to go back and re-read several scenes. Plus, I can hardly wait until the next book. If you are enjoying this series, then you definitely will not be disappointed. "
— Jensownzoo, 5/27/2011" Scary stuff but a over all fun suspencing read. Clearly a whole nother world were ghost practicly roam would be thrillinfg if not impossible apparently not. They're menace and can cause much more damage dead than alive. Debunker Chess thinks which is why its her job to put them in the city. "
— Temple, 5/17/2011" This series gets better as it goes. This was the best book in the series by far. I'm hooked. "
