Handsome, wealthy, and well-born, Jonas Tallent has everything a gentleman needs to enjoy London society to the fullest...and he has. He's played cards until dawn, flirted with eligible young ladies, and made love to some ineligible ones.

But now he's restless and bored with the mindless frivolity and careless pleasure, so it's with a sense of relief that he takes up the reins of his family's estate in rural Devon. His most pressing need is to hire a new manager for the inn; the center of village life. Such a small task, yet he discovers few decent applicants are willing to live in a quiet country backwater.

Then genteel but impoverished Miss Emily Beauregard applies for the position. Jonas's initial response is an emphatic no! Ladies, especially one as attractive as Emily, belong in the ballroom or the bedroom, not running an inn. But with no alternatives, he grudgingly allows Emily to try, and she rapidly proves herself worthy, resurrecting the inn with tact and skill.

But Emily has a secret. It's not only the need to provide for herself and her orphaned siblings that has brought her to Devon. She's surreptitiously searching for a family treasure hidden in the village, the only clues to its location a cryptic rhyme handed down through the generations. Emily is determined to solve the puzzle, find the treasure, and reinstate her family to its rightful place in society.

But Em hasn't bargained on Jonas. His experience is temptation, his attentions irresistible, and he's determined to aid her in her quest. He eventually persuades her to trust him, and together they unravel the clues. But someone else is watching, waiting, and once the family legacy is unearthed, the villain strikes, threatening Em, her family, and the love she and Jonas have discovered in each other's arms. " Every once in a while you need a no thinking book and this is it. Very smutting (if that is a word)! "

" Seemed to drag on and on. The story seemed out of place for the setting. The secondary characters were less than flat, they were practically linear. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Linda G | 2/3/2014

" Normally, I like S. Laurens books but this one was extremely predictable and boring. "

" Once again, I get sucked in by the 'new' shelf at the library. Clearly I should not be around shiny things. This was terrible, but I definitely needed a palate cleanse after Time Traveler's Wife. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Leticia Vega | 1/21/2014

" You can't go wrong with a bit of romance, kidnapping, and a treasure hunt. Definitely an entertaining read. It kept a steady pace, though toward the end I did feel my patience stretch at how the pace slowed down toward the last few chapters. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jennifer | 1/19/2014

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Thea | 12/28/2013

" Two kidnappings too much. The heroine is too stubborn for my taste, not much of a strong character. Lacks all "goodness" qualities. The hero, Jonas, is the epitome of a perfect-EST gentleman ever been written. EVER. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 April | 12/21/2013

" I adore this series!! Stephanie Laurens is a master at the Alpha Rake!! I love the men pursuing their ladies!! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Carla | 9/9/2013

" Decent romance (very spicy) with strong characters. This one is set in the small town of Colyton and revolves around the Inn and a treasure hunt. Fun. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Carli | 2/3/2013

" The first one I've read where she's strayed from her tried and true plot formula. Hallelujah! Greatly enjoyed it, although I do wish that the hero wouldn't use sex (and lots of it!) to 'persuade' the heroine to marry him. Still, it's the genre, I suppose. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Gevera Bert | 10/2/2012

" I usually enjoy the Cynster series books. For some reason, this one felt very bloated and overwritten, with a lot of filler. I found myself skimming rather than reading for pages at a time, because nothing was happening that moved the plot along. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Mel | 9/19/2012

" Like many other reviewers of this book I found myself skimming through most of it. Actually, I skipped almost the last 100 pages because the storyline had just become predictable and bland. I think it is time for Stephanie Laurens to put the Cynsters and their storylines to bed ... permanently. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Petie McCarty | 8/9/2012

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Deborah Sullivan | 2/29/2012

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Kim Serra | 7/18/2011

" Too much sex and not enough of a storyline or plot. I was hoping that this would be a good treasure hunt type of romance story, but it was just too slow and boring. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Annette Meier | 7/17/2011

" Loved it! Not so much of the high-society stuff in 1800's London. Good adventure story too. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Dácil | 3/20/2011

" Como siempre Laurens se enrolla ella solita. La historia en si es buena pero cuando la autora empieza a liarse convierte una trama de doscienta páginas en una de quinientas que termina aburriendo y cansando.
    Una pena. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Qtpham85 | 2/10/2011

" This story was readable, but kind of lackluster. The love scenes were nice, but I found myself skipping through them just to finish the story, because there were so many. It got kind of repetitive. Not her best, for sure. "

" I love reading about the Cynsters.

I wonder if I have read too many of Laurens' books as I knew the where the treasure was from the beginning. Or maybe it was just that obvious. :) still and enjoyable read. "
