Virginia Dean wakes at midnight beside a dead body, with a bloody knife in her hand and no memory of the evening’s events. Dark energy, emanating from the mirrors lining the room, overpowers her senses. With no apparent way in or out, she’s rescued by a man she’s met only once before, but won’t soon forget….
Owen Sweetwater inherited his family’s talent for hunting the psychical monsters who prey on London’s women and children, and his investigation into the deaths of two glass-readers has led him here. The high-society types of the exclusive Arcane Society would consider Virginia an illusionist, a charlatan, even a criminal. But Owen knows better. Virginia’s powers are real—and so is the power she exerts over him simply with her presence. And if her abilities can be relied upon in the midst of great danger, they just might be the key to his investigation.

"Picked this book up at the library on Saturday morning ... and finished it on Saturday night. A quick, fun, read. I always enjoy this author's characters - the women are all strong-willed, the men are always brooding, dangerous and fall hopelessly in love. In this book Virginia Dean is a gaslight (paranormal) reader who finds herself implicated in a murder only to be rescued by paranormal investigator Owen Sweetwater. Everyone needs a little junk food for the brain from time to time!"

" It seemed to be a typical Amanda Quick novel, meaning I could pretty well predict it from beginning to end. Even so, I still enjoyed it. The introduction of the Sweetwater clan was very interesting. The jokes about Dr. Spinner and his treatment for female hysteria were hilarious. The animosity of Gilmore Leybrook toward the Jones's set up even more books for this series, which I will look forward to reading. "
— Renee, 2/17/2014" So far, so good. Only half way through. "
— Rita, 2/15/2014" I really hate when the word psychical is used it sounds made up and it grates on me. Anytime the word came up, which was a lot, I had to change it to psychic. "
— Rachel, 2/5/2014" All right, typical Amanda Quick novel. A pretty quick read and a decent middle of the trilogy. "
— Erin, 12/28/2013" I enjoy the series but wish the author would also write some stand alones not in the series. I miss the quirky humor shown in the books such as Mr.. Perfect written under Jayne Ann Krentz. "
— Liz, 11/27/2013" Same old, same old for Ms Castle/Krentz/James "
— Fran, 11/16/2013" A fine addition to the Arcane Society series. Surprisingly funny in places, in addition to an intriguing paranormal romance. "

— Barbara, 2/1/2013" I'm not big on romance novels, but I had heard/read good things about this series. I found it slow and difficult for me to follow. Maybe I should have read book 1 first. "
— Roxann, 1/12/2013" As wonderful as all of her other paranormal psychic romances this book kept you interested every page of the way! "

— ms, 7/21/2012" Jayne Ann Krentz is one of my favorite authors. Amanda Quick is her historical name she writes under. All of her books feature characters with paranormal abilities. I enjoyed the book, I always appreciate her sense of humor. This book was a little perdicible. "
— Rhonda, 6/25/2012" Karla says: I love this author! "
— Katy, 1/30/2012" Just finished reading this book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as much as I have enjoyed all Amanda's other books. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading her work. "
— Eugenia, 1/7/2012" While I like the contemporary (Krentz) and the paranormal (Castle) time and settings more, this was an enjoyable jaunt in the historical time for Arcane and J&J. I liked both main characters and the premise was well done. "
— Ann, 12/6/2011" I just didn't get into the spirit of the book...for some reason I thought it moved at a weird pace. "
— Me, 11/17/2011" Run of the mill, formulaic paranormal romance. A quick read. "
— lagina, 6/24/2011" Great brain candy during a hectic week, but a little too psychically far out to be beleivable. is it me or is Quick/Krentz getting more formulaic? "
— Andreasoldier, 6/15/2011" Great book where I could put my brain in neutral and just enjoy the story. Do like the Sweetwaters, and think they'd be an intersting family to be a part of. <br/> "
— Deanne, 6/15/2011" An exciting continuation of the trilogy. Owen and Virginia were strong characters with strong psychical talents. Mysteries were solved, villians were thwarted, and the lovers triumphed. What more could you want from a paranormal, historical romance? "
— Carol, 6/11/2011" Was pleasantly surprised that I wasn't bored to tears.....I had about written this author off. Now I guess I will have to read the 3rd book in the series. "
