A magnificent epic set against a history of seven thousand years of the struggles of Gods and Kings and men—of strange lands and events—of fate and a prophecy that must be fulfilled!
THE BELGARIAD
Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil God Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.
But that was only a story, and Garion did not believe in magic dooms, even though the dark man without a shadow had haunted him for years.
Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved—but did not know?
For a while his dreams of innocence were safe, untroubled by knowledge of his strange heritage. For a little while . . .

"Not sure how many times I have now read this series but it never fails to draw me and pull on heart strings. You so quickly learn to love all the main players and to care about them. The reading is easy but exciting. I use it as light relief after heavier reading. Love, love, love it."

" This was an enjoyable read for me. It captures the fantasy style I enjoy most. "
— Ian, 2/17/2014" I didn't love it as much as I remember doing when I was a teenager, but I still enjoyed it. It's the classic quest, and nothing about this telling of it strikes me as especially noteworthy or unusual, but it's a credible version of the classic tale. "
— Jess, 2/10/2014" One of the favorite fantasy series of my youth, mainly for the characters. "
— Fletcher, 2/2/2014" A terrific first book in the series, definitely hooked me for the long haul. Its just simple fantasy story, but that is absolutely what I wanted to read. I love the idea of a band of warriors/specialists wandering on an adventure to save the fate of the world. Ringers who are specialists and a motley crew, but together they make the most formidable band of heroes. It was clear from the first chapter who everyone 'really' was, but the ride is what we are in for on these stories. My favorite part about this was the story of the beginning of time, which definitely set the tone for the book. I also enjoyed having legends along for the ride. All in all, a good book and great start to the series. 3 1/2 stars! "
— Eric, 1/30/2014" I might read more of the series when next in need of a comfort read "
— Geraldine, 1/27/2014" A different kind of book for me (fantasy)... but I loved it; needed a good fun book to read that would pull me in and the let world settle around me. This was the perfect book, and now I look forward to more lazy weekends to follow the series! Thanks for the tip Nadia! "
— Anne, 1/19/2014" when i was a little girl.... "
— Gonia, 1/16/2014" Read this a few years ago. Really good classic fantasy. These days it may seem a bit derivative, but Eddings creates great and memorable characters. One of the few books I've read that I look back on and think of re-reading. "
— Brian, 1/6/2014" Hard to get through but a decent story "
— Whitnie, 12/7/2013" A friend recommended this series to me as a good Fantasy series to try. I put off starting it for awhile because of the art work on the covers, but glad I finally gave it a shot. Really enjoyed this book and looking forward to starting book #2. "
— Sarah, 11/28/2013" The start of a fantastic and fun fantasy adventure. "
— El, 11/26/2013" This book was the first novel I read purely for pleasure, as a teenager in the mid-eighties. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I thank Mr. Eddings for spinning such a wonderful story. "
— Geoff, 11/10/2013" This series is the fantasy I recommend for people who don't like fantasy. I particularly like that the characters change over time, something which happens too rarely in most high fantasy. "
— Dan, 6/20/2013" This is another good book with action, adventure, suspense, and magic. It's a good read. "
— Wendy, 1/16/2013" One of the best in his business; still nostalgically awesome for young & old adults alike "
— Kenneth, 1/12/2013" This is starting out like the King James version of the book of Numbers. If it doesn't smooth out soon I shall smote it from my kindle and put a tome worthy upon its memory. i've been told it smooths out, I finished the other book I was on so I'm giving it another go. We shall see. "
— Shayne, 9/23/2012" I read this series when I was a young teen. I STILL own the same paperback books from back then and have read them several times as has my daughter. GREAT series, reads wonderfully, paints vivid images in your mind. Still some of my favorite books! "
— Bonnie, 9/4/2012" I LOVED this series. I don't even know how many times I read it, but I think it's about time for another go- may update this if I get around to it (and remember to). ;) "
— Lauretta, 8/25/2012" I liked these books. The belgariad and the mallorean were intriguing stories. Some of his better writing. "
— Kristen, 8/13/2012" One of the defining classic series in the genre. A very good read! "
— Frank, 5/4/2012" Dope ..... I loved the way in which the concept of magic is defined here, very fresh approach. Also the journey of Garion and his fate are unique for fantasy. "
— Charles, 4/17/2012" I read these years ago and they are just as mesmerizing now. "
— Hilary, 12/20/2011" This is where my descent into nerdery began. Tanya Lasley let me borrow Pawn of Prophecy in 6th grade. I should google her. "
— Bravepixels, 6/21/2011" This book was kind of hard to get through the first half. However, it did end up picking up its pace and becoming a more entertaining read after the first half or 2/3rds. It will probably be a while before i start the third book of this series though. "
— Miller, 3/12/2011" My personal favorite way to read the series! "
— Telisha, 3/5/2011" This is my third reading - love it just as much as the first. "
— Annie, 2/24/2011" This is one of my all time favorite comfort reads. I always recommend it to people that say they don't like the fantasy genre because it is so well rounded and the character are so love-able. "
— Tonileg, 1/26/2011" Currently re-reading, actually. This is pretty much one of my favorite series ever and I knew if anything was going to get me out of post-op depression, this would! "
— Mariah, 1/26/2011" One of the best fantasy series I've read. "
— Tiffany, 12/4/2010" Read these when I was little. I loved them :) "
— Susan, 12/1/2010" I love this book. It has the old fashion adventure, humor, romance, and excitement. "
— Mary, 9/30/2010" Just couldn't get into it as much as I tried. There are some nice stretches and Eddings certainly devotes a lot of time/energy to creating his world, but I found it tediously redundant as the characters traveled from one waypoint to another.... "
— Henry, 9/16/2010" This series is an example of classic fantasy brought to the highest with Edding's gift of weaving a real world and its people into life. "
— Jennie, 8/27/2010" Starts out a little slow, but then becomes amazing. "
— Jen, 8/17/2010" Still a fun, quick read. Not the best fantasy ever, true, but it's not overly dense or full of itself either. "
— Matt, 7/19/2010" Not on the same lines as Feist or Brooks, but a very enjoyable read nonetheless. Classic epic fantasy. "
