An urgent cry for help brings Poirot to France. But he arrives too late to save his client, whose brutally stabbed body now lies face downwards in a shallow grave on a golf course.

But why is the dead man wearing his son's overcoat? And who was the impassioned love-letter in the pocket for? Before Poirot can answer these questions, the case is turned upside down by the discovery of a second, identically murdered corpse....

" Another great Poirot book from Christie. Starts out very well, few surprises here and there as usual and the ending is pretty surprising. Great read and significant when going through all the Poirots books chronologically. "

" Christie packed in a lot of twists and redirections. It works, but it also seems slightly overdone. Regardless, Poirot & Hastings are charming and fun. "

" Good 'ol Agatha. I thought I had it figured out and she twisted it enough where I was wondering how the heck Hercule Poirot was going to explain it. But, alas, he did it in Poirot fashion. I loved it! "

" The second in Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot series. Well-plotted, if not deep, story with the delightful Poirot and Hastings making a great team. "

" I am trying (not sure if I will live long enough to read them all at the rate I'm going) to read all of Christie's books in the order in which she wrote them. I enjoy the Poirot stories a lot thus far and am looking forward to reading about Marple at some point. "

" This one will keep you guessing, with some interesting twists and quite a surprise at the end. Capt. Hastings finding love was an unexpected development: mid-40's stodgy British man hooks up with early 20's acrobat performer, who somehow finds him irresistible... please. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Mary | 8/28/2012

" Enh. It's supposed to be a fabulously plotted mystery (and it is), but the Hasting character (so fun in the BBC) gets kinda tiring in the novel. Definitely a twisty mystery - and none of the "cheating" that sometimes leaks into Christie's later novels. "
