There is a serial killer on the loose, working his way through the alphabet, and the whole country is in a state of panic.

A is for Mrs. Ascher in Andover, B is for Betty Barnard in Bexhill, C is for Sir Carmichael Clarke in Churston. With each murder, the killer is getting more confident. But leaving a trail of deliberate clues to taunt the proud Hercule Poirot might just prove to be the first, and fatal, mistake.

Quotes & Awards

  • “A baffler of the first water, written in Agatha Christie’s best manner. It seems to us the very best thing she has done, not even excepting Roger Ackroyd.

    New York Times

  • “Mrs. Christie has invented an entirely new plot for a detective story—a difficult thing in these days; she is to be congratulated on the perfection of her invention.”

    Times (London)

  • “An entirely original idea.”

    Daily Telegraph (London)

  • “Agatha Christie at her best.”

    New York Herald Tribune

  • “Her best yet. Where does she get hold of these brilliant notions?”

    Bristol Evening Post (England)

  • “More disturbing than the alphabetic sequence of the killings or the ABC Railway guide that the killer leaves at the scene of each crime are the taunting notes Hercule Poirot receives each time the killer is about to strike again. It is one of Poirot’s most challenging cases yet.”

    Library Journal

  • “Hercule Poirot comes out of his retirement, enticed to the chase by a series of anonymous letters, each one prophesying a murder in a certain town on a certain date. He fails—for four times—then the net tightens.”

    Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

" This book was an excellent read. It has suspense the whole way through. It is the type of book that you can not put down until you have finished it. "

" Really enjoyed this one... What I learned?? that I'm not as smart as Hercule Poirot - or Agatha Christie! Really got me thinking about how people write/construct a mystery. "

" It has been a long time since I have read any Christie, and this is my first encounter with Hercule Poirot. Somewhat odd, since the first section makes several suggestions that this is a later Poirot adventure. Nothing thrilling, but a fun and quick read. I would guess that there is better Christie and better Poirot out there though. "

" I truly enjoy the Poirot books, I am also very pleased that Christie remains an author where I often am not certain of the ending in the first 1/3rd of the book. This story, which involves a serial killer, does not disappoint. "

" Agatha Christie is one of my favourite writers for many reasons, but specially for her early works. This was a nice book, with a great end and very easy to read, but somehow, it failed to keep me engaged and, even though I read it in a couple of days, it's not one of the best! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Caroline Potterf | 8/11/2012

" This was pretty good - this was the first Christie book that I had read, though I've seen many of the David Suchet films. The plot wasn't quite as "oh!" as Murder on the Orient Express or Cards on the Table. It was a good read, though, I enjoyed it. Love Christie's writing style. "
