At the Threshold Of Darkness, Redemption Awaits. It is 1772 and the world is at war. Or so it seems to Toma Nicolescu, a highly ranked warrior for the Russian Army. By order of the Empress Catherine herself, Toma has been dispatched to Moldavia to protect two women who are pivotal to Russian interests in the region. The twins Lucine and Natasha Cantemir must come to no harm. Toma’s loyalty to his Empress is without question, but when he meets Lucine he is shocked by the feelings her beauty awakens within him. Putting duty first, Toma forsakes his heart and confesses nothing to Lucine. But the duke Vlad van Valerik has noticed her as well. Vlad is handsome, wealthy, and seems to enchant all who surround him. Including Lucine. Toma travels to Vlad’s estate to learn more about the man . . . and to rescue Lucine if necessary. There Toma witnesses things that baffle and unnerve him. The entire castle is pulsing with an incredible sense of freedom, yet there is something darker at play. A palpable evil. Fighting for the life and soul of his true love, Toma enters into a battle that has raged since the dawn of time. A battle where in order to win you must surrender. And to live, you must first die.

"What an unusual book! When I first started reading it, I wasn't sure I liked it because it's kind-of "out there". But, as I kept reading, I got to the point where I couldn't put it down. Kind-of reminds of a cross between Dracula and The Exorcist. Odd...yes. I'll definitely try a few more books by Dekker."

“Pacing is fast as a hummingbird, villains induce cardiac arrhythmia, and the novel must be read with blood pressure pills.”
— Publishers Weekly" I didn't really "get" this book until after I read it. I think about it still, especially when we sing "There Is a River" in church. "There is a river, full of grace, and it flows from Immanuel's veins." "
— Lisa, 2/12/2014" A little cheesy but overall this book was well written and still grabbed my attention so I wanted to keep reading. The ending was a little too convenient for my liking. "
— Hazel, 2/8/2014" Amazing Story... I did not what to put this book down. "
— Alice, 1/5/2014" One of my favorite books that I have ever read I recommend this to everyone! "
— Brittni, 12/30/2013" Loved it loved it LOVED IT! a really awesome twist on a vampire story, with Christian symbolism. thought it was fantastic. "
— Amber, 12/27/2013" Awesome love story of evil vampires and good humans "
— Cameron, 12/25/2013" I like Dekker, but this book disappointed me. If this was your first one by him and you didn't like it, try a different one. "
— Paul, 12/23/2013" Great book, classic salvation tale with added details. Very interesting and had me gripped. Ted Dekker you will never cease to amaze me. "
— Casey, 11/27/2013" Audio Book. Vampire Romance BS. It wasn't terribly exciting. "

— Sylvia, 2/4/2013" I was expecting a little bit more out of this one. Frankly it wasn't nearly as god as some of his others. Kind of weird like "House". "
— Paula, 1/4/2013" I did not finish this book. I read a little over one hundred pages and find this Dekker book to deathly tedious. Presumably, according to other reviews, it picks up near the end. I guess I'll never know. "
— Jay, 12/7/2012" This story kept me turning the pages. Dekker should have left out the "party-pooper"reference, otherwise an interesting vamp read. "
— Michelle, 3/30/2012" Not one of Dekker's best. I've been reading books recently with significant character development and these characters just weren't very believable. "
— Candice, 3/6/2012" One book I am glad I didn't waste my money on. Boring, predictable and waste of good paper. "
— Virginia, 12/10/2011" Loved this book. Dekker always reminds me how much God loves me! Also liked that he didn't glorify any Vampires. You didn't come away feeling like you'd like to be the living dead. Ugh. "
— Amy, 8/17/2011" I won't spoil the story for anyone...but it's a fresh look at an old story. I didn't give it the 5th star because I figured it out too quickly. ;) "
— Zoe, 7/16/2011" It was kind of slow at first and slightly repetitive, but i can understand why which is why i give it 4 1/2 stars. The ending was great. "
— Brittaney, 5/18/2011" Wow! What a love story! I love Ted Dekker,His books are the best! "
— Cindy, 5/17/2011" Once I got into it, I enjoyed it.
It started like one of those historial romances though.......Love at first sight, pounding heart (etc)but the evil verses good struggle was great Dekker.

Not one of my favorites though. "
— Mom, 5/16/2011" Audio Book. Vampire Romance BS. It wasn't terribly exciting. "
— Jake, 5/6/2011" didn't like it enough to finish it. ted dekker has written far better boooks than this for example black red and white, and blink just to name a few. was disappointed with this book. "
— Francie, 5/4/2011" I kept reading in the hope it would get better. Read "Burn" or one of his others instead. This one is almost deathly boring. "
— Kris, 4/22/2011" quick, easy read. entertaining and brainless plot. one of those books i read because it's too cold to do much else. "
— Cari, 3/26/2011" With an incredibly busy schedule, it took me only a couple days to read this book. Every free moment that I had I would start reading. I loved this book. It is a unique one of Ted Dekker's. "
— Angela, 3/22/2011" so not like most Ted Dekker books. I was in over 10 chapters before it started to really interest me. It read more like a romance novel than a thriller. Although a lot of people really raved about it, (which is why i read it in the first place) it just didn't appeal to me. "
