"A girl finds out alot of things she never knew before and has many new experiences as well. She finds out that she was a mistake because her mom was already going through menopause. Her niece is ruining her life. And her boss is in love with her. it's a lot to handle for one person!!!"
— Damon (5 out of 5 stars)
“Funny and optimistic.”
— Kirkus Reviews“When it comes to writing honest and realistic stories of teenage girls’ lives, Carolyn Mackler proves herself top writer for the job…Mackler has become so skilled at taking regular girls and their everyday stories and transforming them into something more. Not only can we relate to these characters, but their stories are actually meaningful too. Mara is so perfectly imperfect that she continues to surprise us to the last page.”
— RT Book Reviews (4 stars)" While the manin characters grew, the lead didn't really ever become likeable to me. :( "
— Jacci, 2/6/2014" Not a bad book. It's pretty typical YA stuff... girl stressed out with school work, having to deal with a new relative moving in and shaking up life at school, asserting her independence with the parents, and falling in love with an older guy. I liked the characters though and was fairly entertained throughout. "
— Sara, 2/4/2014" I don't often read books in the Young Adult genre, though I suspect this one is better than most. Mara Valentine, the main character, is a 17-year-old high school senior. She's super-smart, highly organized, competitive and somehwat of an over-achiever. Mara is on track to enter Yale University in the fall and is neck-and-neck with her ex-boyfriend in the race to become the class valedictorian. Things seem to be going pretty much according to plan when Mara's 16-year-old niece, Vivienne Vail Valentine, or V for short, arrives unexpectedly. Mara's much older sister Aimee, a free spirit who never settles in any place for long, can't take her daughter with her when she moves to Costa Rica. V ends up staying with her grandparents and Mara at their home in western New York. V seems to be the polar opposite of Mara. Shortly after V starts attending the high school where Mara is a student, she acquires a reputation for being a slut and a stoner. Soon the two girls are squabbling, and Mara finds herself avoiding V as much as possible, both in school and at home. Toward the end of the school year, V discovers a hidden talent that boosts her esteem in the eyes of her classmates, and Mara realizes that sometimes it's okay to take time to smell the roses. "
— Patricia, 1/21/2014" This book was full of drama, yet i find it a little uninteresting. Sure, Mara's life is interesting and foreign, with it's perfectionistic quality compared to my messiness. Therefore, I find it kind of hard to relate to Mara and her problems. For example, Mara stresses a lot about neatness. I usually do not give things a second glance to make sure they are neat. Readers who like Lauren Myracle, and the book The Earth, my Butt, and Other Big Round Things, because they are by the same author. "
— 7709julia, 1/14/2014" Mara Valentine was a typ A-blood, a type A personality and.... an A-cup bra.Mra is on the fast track to success: Shes duking it out for valedictorian, shes already taking college courses. Mara much older sistr amie hs alweays been a screw-up, traveling aroun the world in searc of the next big thing. Mara is desperate not to disapointher mom and dad the way Amie did----she hs to succed because she i her parents "only hope". Secretly, though, Mara vulnrable her collage courses have left her without many high school friend, and shes still reeling from a painfl breakup with eqully high-achieving Travis. she hide her insecurities by trying t control absolutley everything, from her shedule to her emotions to hr diet. She cnfesses that she has become a vegan not only because she is "grossed out by animal byproducts" but because veganism is "all-cnsumedgly obsessive...It cn be a pain, but it helps keep my mind off things". Thats wh when Amiees troublemaking daughter(and maras niece), sixteen-year-old V, cmes t live with maras famly wile Amiee chases her surfer boyfriend to costa rica, Mara is furious. V has always hadth abiliy to see through Mars veneer and to call attention to Maras fears an anxietes. When V moves in on Maras ex, mara vows never to be friends with this "class-ditching, Chair-in-the-principle's-office-warmming deabeat" girl. This was not on o my bes books read but i will a lest give it three stars and i would maybe recomend it to someone that likes funny and or discusting stories. "
— Nancy, 1/9/2014" Mara's life was perfect until she was told that her niece - one year younger than her, would be moving in with her family. Now V is making out with Mara's ex, and creating a bad rep for herself at school and chasing Mara out of every place she feels comfortable. "
— Sandy, 12/29/2013" Cute. A fun, light read. "
— Tajha, 12/21/2013" Another great book. I have been on a YA kick later and this one did not disappoint me. Mara is great and so is V. To see both of them grow and take lessons from each other made this book very enjoyable. "
— Ashley, 7/10/2013" It's no "The Earth, My Butt..." but it's good. Perhaps a bit unrealistic, with the romancing the older, more sophisticated coffee shop boss stuff. But what would I know? I worked at Taco Bell and wore combat boots. "
— Jenny, 6/20/2013" This one was just okay for me. I had trouble getting into it. I checked it out because I really liked The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things. This one just wasn't as good. "
— Robin, 5/12/2013" Cute, fast, and Mackler certainly can turn some clever phrases. However - veganism as a phase/obsessive need to completely control something? You can tell she's loosening up, letting go, because she consumes animal products and stops caring about the welfare of dairy cows and laying hens? Boo. "
— Sarra, 4/29/2013" This is one of my faves...Mackler is a great YAL author. This book is another one of those books that always seem to "disappear" off my shelves. Students love it and so do I...It always brings me right back to high school... "
— Stacy, 9/3/2012" I thought this book was good, but it took a while for me to get into it..And i hated the ending!! "
— Pippa, 7/1/2012" I thpught this book had and AMAZING plot and an amazing idea, but the ending was (unfortunately) awful. But basically it rocked. "
— Allysah, 4/28/2012" its pretty funny and its really all about a girl breaking out of her shell just because she' pissed at her cousin and this book is really awesome and spectacular so go and read it already1 "
— Julia, 4/20/2012" Absolutely love this book and have read it many times. "
— Abby, 3/22/2012" Mackler totally gets teenage girls...or at least I totally get the teenage girls she creates. I really love Mara's growth and self discovery, and I was always a total fan of V's. This is light but moving. "
— Michele, 1/25/2012" this book was also a quud buh quick read. it was interestinq and i would reccomend iht tew ne. one.. "
— &nd, 9/18/2011" Some people grow up to be so perfect, missing out on the fun side of life. But then, they're also the kind of people who are expected to do best. "
— reiva, 9/11/2011" Takes place 3 minutes away from my house! I go to the same school! Love this book! "
— Violet, 7/26/2011" Bored me. I still skimmed through the next book with these characters as well, but neither were very engaging to me. "
— Michelle, 6/29/2011" Really great book, you can really relate with Mara. This book encouraged me to read more books from Carolyn Mackler and so far I haven't been disapointed. "
— Nadine, 6/6/2011" Best book for someone who has been told, "Dude, chill." "
— Hillary, 5/28/2011" Typical high school plot. Funny and cute. "
— Emily, 5/7/2011" I think this book is interesting for people older than 12 because its really a reality story based on high school drama. Every girl loves to read about something about boys and what they did. "
— Kaitlyn, 4/5/2011" This audio book sounds like it's read by someone who used to do voice work for Beverly Hills Teens. Who knew western NY upper-middle class fathers sounded like they could be drawling "Bi-aaaan-caaaa" every time they speak? "
— Alana, 3/24/2011" I gave this one 4 stars because i actually didnt want to put the book down. Thats how good it was. "
— Lywana, 3/24/2011" I just want to say that a close friend of mine is vegan. I am well aware of what a vegan can and cannot eat, and Mara is a terrible vegan. Vegans do not eat jellybeans and honey. Period. Mackler seemed to half-ass her research. "
— Fallon, 3/23/2011" I loved this book! It was funny, so true, family drama and love filled. It was one of the many good books I read. "
