Publisher Description

The international bestselling series with over 5 million copies sold in the U.S. alone! Several years have passed since the apprentice and his master, Will and Halt, first met, and Will is finally a full-fledged Ranger with his own fief to look after. The fief seems sleepy—boring, even—until Lord Syron, master of a castle far in the north, is struck down by a mysterious illness. Joined by his friend Alyss, Will is suddenly thrown headfirst into an extraordinary adventure, investigating fears of sorcery and trying to determine who is loyal to Lord Syron. As Will battles growing hysteria, traitors, and most of all, time, Alyss is taken hostage, and Will is forced to make a desperate choice between his mission and his friend. Perfect for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, T.H. White’s The Sword in the Stone, Christopher Paolini’s Eragon series, and George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire series.

"Ranger Bartell has retired, and Will is a newly commissioned Ranger with his first assignment: Ranger Bartell's old fief, Sea Cliff, in the southeastern corner of Araluen. Will arrives and finds an abused dog that he adopts and cares for, and he finds a creative way to handle a party of Skandian raiders without a fight, and deal with the man who abused the dog as well. Alyss arrives with a secret temporary assignment for Will: travel in disguise to the northernmost fief and discover what kind of "sorcery" is happenening at Castle Macindaw. The lord of the castle there has fallen ill with a bizarre ailment, and others are blaming a hundred-year-old sorcerer's curse. Is it real, or is there some plot to create an opening for an invasion from the north? Not all is as it seems, and Will finds surprises around every corner, leading to a cliffhanger ending... and now we wait for Book 6! Lots of action, adventure and mystery, with Flanagan's trademark fast-paced plotting and excellent descriptive writing. Grades 6 and up."

" I'd almost give this 4 stars because it ends so abruptly when the story is just taking flight. Cliffhangers will be the death of me! Very fast paced story taking place 5 years after the 4th book. Delighted to see the story progress with maturity, plenty of adventure, and the same lovable characters. Look forward to book 6! "

" I felt like this book was better written than any of the previous books, but the storyline wasn't horribly exciting. It was almost like is was a filler book that was written to prepare you for the next book in line. Having said that, this series always seems to provide books that are a fun, light read. "

" This one, especially the beginning, was a bit disappointing, but the benefit is that such these are such quick reads, it went quickly. The ending was much better and stopped with a good hanger making me want to jump really quickly into the next one. Introduced some characters that could prove interesting as the series progresses. "

About John Flanagan

John A. Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia hoping to be a writer. It wasn’t until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John’s assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting. After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years. John began writing the Ranger’s Apprentice series as a way to encourage his son, Michael, to enjoy reading. He currently lives in the suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife.
