"I was disapointed with this book in comparison with the Black Jewels triology, while staying true to the world she previously created it is hard to introduce another strong male after Daemon Sadi. Needless I liked the book and enjoyed the great discriptions that Ann Bishop makes."

" Why did I read this? Oh right, because when I go on a book bender, I just keep reading until I run out of things to read. I mean it's not bad, but not great either. The characters are a little more complex than in the first trilogy, so it bodes well for the other books (right? right?). It's one of those books that makes you smile when you read it, and then the contentment fades after a few days and you forget you even read it. Enjoyable, but nothing special. Reminds me of quite a bit of manga I binge on when I require reading material. "
— Ayse, 2/10/2014" The Black Jewels books are highly entertaining soap opera fantasy. Not earthshakingly profound or total frippery, but wonderful quick summer reads. "
— Belinda, 2/7/2014" This is the only one of these books that i wasn't totally enthralled with. The characters didn't jump off the page and grab me like the rest did. I think I just love the original people. I'm glad the rest(#5, #6) are again with the characters from the trilogy. "
— Sandra, 2/5/2014" Unfortunately predictable, especially given the first three in the Black Jewels Trilogy. "
— Amanda, 2/3/2014" This was not so good. "
— Mary, 1/21/2014" Didn't finish. Was too dark. "
— Karen, 1/20/2014" The story of The Grey Lady. Daemon Sadi's adventures before Witch was born. Very good story if you have a curiosity about the Sadist prior to Jaenelle. "
— Lisa, 12/30/2013" Not as good as the original series... lacks the finesse that was so greatly achieved in her previous work. Not giving up on her will continue to read her works (as they're on the shelf at home)! "
— AylaBlue, 12/22/2013" Interesting story in the Black Jewels world. Takes place many years before the trilogy. "
— Angie, 11/19/2013" While outside the time frame of "the usual suspects" mostly (there is a Daemon cameo) I love this addition to the Black Jewels world if only for the lead in to the second trilogy that this presents....the Grey Lady story line. Want more Black Jewels? Read it!! "
— Lauralie, 6/28/2013" Yay for a return to the world of The Black Jewels Trilogy world. It was a good quick read and once again left me wanting more. "
— Rhonda, 2/18/2013" I've followed Anne Bishop's work for a few years now, and all I can think to say about her work is this: you won't find a better author anywhere in the world! "
— Danielle, 11/11/2012" Good addition to the world of Black Jewels - engaging characters and plenty of adventure. "
— Marissa, 10/17/2012" Classic fantasy story, a must read! "
— Megan, 10/9/2012" i love anne bishop can you tell? "
— Cassandra, 10/6/2012" What can I say. These books just draw me in. "
— Gabrielle, 7/17/2012" This book serves as a sort of prequel to the Black Jewels Trilogy. Daemon makes an appearance, which rocks, of course. As with all of Ms. Bishop's books, the characters are so well developed your heart breaks for them in their sadness and leaps for them in their joy. "
— Kristina, 5/29/2012" I have loved this book as well as all of the Anne Bishop books that I have read. It actually takes place congruently with the Black Jewel Trilogy. The books that follow it are Shadow Queen and Shalador's Lady. If I were to read them again, I would read them as a trilogy. "
— Diane, 2/19/2012" An interesting enough one shot. But nowhere near the quality of the original trilogy. Too simple, doesn't take advantage of the world she had already created "
— David, 12/1/2011" Really rather liked this, though the whole sexual/dominance element was a bit silly. "
— A., 11/8/2011" The secret of the "invisible ring" isn't hard to predict and definitely falls in the cheesy category, but that's redeemed by the very real emotions and understandable mindsets of the characters. "
— Rachel, 6/27/2011" I am re-reading Anne Bishop's books. All of her books leaves you loving the characters and missing them when their not in your reading life anymore. I'm a big fan of hers and own all of her books. "
— Kathy, 5/18/2011" This was disappointing because it contained none of the original characters. While I did finish the book, none of these characters made me wish for a second. Nothing new was added to the series and I wasn't really engaged. The only thing that was interesting was the better understanding of 'Rut.' "
— Chani, 4/7/2011" Good addition to the world of Black Jewels - engaging characters and plenty of adventure. "
— Marissa, 4/4/2011" Interesting story in the Black Jewels world. Takes place many years before the trilogy. "
— Angie, 1/30/2011" I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed reading about Jared and Lia (and Blaed and Thera). "
— Gaynell, 1/29/2011" A wonderful prequel to Black Jewels Trilogy. Not much more then that I can say. "
— Erin, 1/19/2011" Not as good as the original series... lacks the finesse that was so greatly achieved in her previous work. Not giving up on her will continue to read her works (as they're on the shelf at home)! "
