A man walks into a trendy Los Angeles restaurant -- a disgruntled ex-employee with an automatic weapon -- and seconds later, thirteen people are dead and thirty-two more have been wounded. It is a heinous act of mass slaughter that haunts Homicide Detective Peter Decker.
But, though eyewitnesses saw only the lone gunman -- who apparently took his own life after his bloody work was done -- evidence suggests more than one weapon was fired. It is a disturbing inconsistency that sends Decker racing headlong into a sordid, labyrinthine world of Southern California money and power, on an investigation that threatens to destroy his reputation and his career.

"I really like this series, especially the new developments with Cindy, Decker's daughter. I do find the writing a bit choppy so its hard to get started or read this series when reading/listening to another zuthor"

“Kellerman’s pacing is sure and her characters nuanced, particularly as they struggle to blend the real-life details of detective work with their orthodox Jewish home life. And it’s a credit to Kellerman’s storytelling abilities that long after she reveals ‘who done it,’ readers will be frantically flipping pages to find out just how and why.”
— People“Layering crisis on crisis, Kellerman builds a page-turner…Lots of action, an intricate plot and credible, multidimensional characters makes this another standout entry in an evolving series.”
— Publishers Weekly“Nail-biting detective work.”
— Kirkus Reviews“Without a doubt, Faye Kellerman is one of the most unique suspense writers around. Her blending of Jewish religion, family, and culture with the gritty realities of LA streets makes for unmatched entertainment.”
— RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!, 1997 Best Contemporary Suspense Award winner)" One of her best! Love the series and the way she keeps us guessing! This narrator is wonderful and makes you totally get into the characters personalities! "
— cj, 5/22/2018" this was a great story. it was written in 1997ish and you can tell that it was "pre-CSI" because the forensics were up and coming, not a given. nevertheless, the plot and mystery were still worth reading. "
— Aleisha, 2/12/2014" This was an ok read. I think I need alittle more action... "
— Robin, 2/10/2014" There is a horrific mass murder that takes place in a restaurant. Of course, it is Peter Decker's case. I liked the book for a few reasons: It all makes sense at the end; I like the relationship aspects that Kellerman brings out; Because I am Jewish, I somewhat like the way the Jewishness of the family is woven in. However, I thought that some of the dialogue was stilted. It just didn't sound the way I believe some people talk. The story moved along fairly well. I think if I had read all the books leading up to this one (it is one of a series of Peter Decker mysteries), I may have liked it more but it is a good read. "
— Joanne, 2/7/2014" Peter Decker and his family are such wonderful well rounded characters. I enjoy this series very much. "
— Laurie, 2/1/2014" This was the first book in the Peter Decker/Rina series I have read so I kind of jumped into the middle of their story. I enjoyed her other book more--about Germany at the start Hitler's Third Reich. "
— Diane, 1/12/2014" I always enjoy the Kellerman books--this one fits the mold. "
— Cyndee, 1/5/2014" Another great book in this series!! "
— Heather, 12/28/2013" First book I read after a friend gave it to me for Christmas. I was hooked! "
— Christy, 12/27/2013" fun read, plot is a bit far-out "
— Ann, 12/3/2013" This is an interesting look at a multiple-murder scene, with some red herrings thrown in to complicate the plot. These characters (Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus) are growing on me. "
— Katie, 11/12/2013" No. If I could have rated it a zero, I would have. "
— Karen, 10/13/2013" I really like the books by Faye Kellerman. To me, the characters are well rounded and thought out. The mysteries are good and not as far fetched as other authors seem to go with them. A great read. "
— Marti, 2/8/2013" One of the better ones in the series. "
— Jeanne, 9/16/2012" I'm going to take a break from Faye Kellerman for a while after this one, but it was very good. It was not concerned with the Jewish community itself, but Peter and Rina's orthodoxy does have a role to play. "
— Susan, 8/6/2012" More twists and turns but you have to enjoy the interaction! "
— melody, 5/4/2012" Another excellent read in this series. "
— Pauline, 5/3/2012" Stumbled upon this book by accident, but really enjoyed it. A good murder mystery. "
