Plot Summary

Best-selling and much acclaimed writer Nicholas Sparks brings to life yet another compelling story in his novel, "Safe Haven." Making brief visits to New England, New York and Philadelphia, the novel's action ultimately settles in the picturesque North Carolina destination of Southport. This small historic town is located about 30 miles south of Wilmington, where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

A lovely young woman named Katie finds herself knowing no one, with few resources and in dire need of a job, food and shelter as she determines to start a new life. For reasons of her own, she has resigned herself to remaining alone, aloof even, in a town notorious for its Southern hospitality.

Just as she is begins to make headway into rebuilding her life, the walls she has put up around herself are threatened. A young, silver-haired grocery store owner, recently widowed, named Alex Wheatley, and his two children, Josh and Kristen, have interrupted her thoughts, reminding her that life is meant to be lived, not escaped from.

In true Nicholas Sparks style, a love story appears promising -- but turns impossible, for Katie is a woman who must always be looking over her shoulder. Romance, children, friendships and any semblance of a normal life are things she cannot even dream about, let alone turn into reality.

Nicholas Sparks is a North Carolina writer whose novels have sold over 77 million copies. Sixteen of his works have appeared on the New York Times and international bestseller lists. They have been translated into over 47 languages. Joining seven novels already turned into major motion pictures, "Safe Haven," the movie, opens in box offices Valentine's Day, 2013, featuring actors Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. Other books by Nicholas Sparks include "Dear John," "The Notebook," "A Walk to Remember," and "The Last Song."

All of Sparks' novels are available in audiobook format and promise hours of listening pleasure. His plots are fast-moving, with plenty of unpredictable twists and turns. His characters could be the girl next door or the couple down the street. Each and every one will pull at your heartstrings and the "Safe Haven" audiobook is no exception.

"This book had me intrigued from the getgo. It did take me a while to get into enough that I couldnt put it down. Once I hit about page 60 I.couldnt stop. I feel kevins story was a little drug on with i.sufficient details. I would have liked to know more about him and maybe why he was the way he was. Whether it stemmed from child hood or maybe more. I also would have enjoyed knowing if Katie ever want back to visit her elderly neighbor. The book like I said was good. I gave 4 stars because it was kinda drug on. If the author was going to go so in depth with details I would have liked it being more relevant things. I would have also like to see Kevins outcome a little different. It seemed too easy, he felt like he was playing God I would have liked him to get what he deserved. He got it too easy for what he put katie through. I also would have liked to see him get a littke more than a slap on the wrist from his captain. Seriously nobody had any suspicion about erins whereabout to actually look into?"

Publisher Summary

In a small North Carolina town, a mysterious and beautiful woman running from her past slowly falls for a kind-hearted store owner . . . until dark secrets begin to threaten her new life.

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathetic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.
