Thousands of years prove it, and Western science backs it: Meditation sharpens focus. Meditation lowers blood pressure, relieves chronic pain, reduces stress. Meditation helps us experience greater calm. Meditation connects us to our inner-most feelings and challenges our habits of self-judgment. Meditation helps protect the brain against aging and improves our capacity for learning new things. Meditation opens the door to real and accessible happiness. There is no better person to show a beginner how to harness the power of meditation than Sharon Salzberg, one of the world’s foremost meditation teachers and spiritual authors. Cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society, author of Lovingkindness, Faith, and other books, Ms. Salzberg distills 30 years of teaching meditation into a 28-day program that will change lives. It is not about Buddhism, it’s not esoteric—it is closer to an exercise, like running or riding a bike. From the basics of posture, breathing, and the daily schedule to the finer points of calming the mind, distraction, dealing with specific problem areas (pain in the legs? falling asleep?) to the larger issues of compassion and awareness, Real Happiness is a complete guide. It explains how meditation works; why a daily meditation practice results in more resiliency, creativity, peace, clarity, and balance; and gives twelve meditation practices, including mindfulness meditation and walking meditation. An extensive selection of FAQs cover the most frequent concerns of beginners who meditate—“Is meditation selfish?” “How do I know if I’m doing it right?” “Can I use meditation to manage weight?” Includes guided meditations.

"I found Sharon Salzberg's "Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation" book very easy to understand and apply. I purchased the book because I wanted to learn more about meditation and begin a meditation practice. The book is set up to read in a weekly format as you build on your knowledge and apply the approaches in your practice. The book includes a companion CD that you can listen to for guided meditations. Sharon shares examples throughout the book with personal anecdotes to make meditation accessible for everyone. Whether you have been practicing meditation for a long time or you are a beginner, you will learn something from Sharon's book to enhance or begin your practice."

" This is a great resource for anyone wanting to either start a meditation practice or re-fresh an old one. Sharon Salzberg is one of the greatest teachers on this subject in the world and this is akin to getting 1-2-1 tuition from her. I found this to be absolutely terrific and would highly recommend to anyone. "
— Tybers, 4/17/2024" This is a very good, easy to do, and approachable introduction to the practice of meditation and what to expect. The accompanying CD is a huge help. "
— Darrell, 2/13/2014" A perfect primer for anyone who is interested in improving their physical and emotional health through meditation. It is essentially a four-week course in which you learn several core practices and the concepts behind them. It comes with a helpful cd with brief instruction and guided meditations. Even the non-beginner may discover helpful tidbits. "
— Amy, 2/11/2014" Almost everyone I know could benefit from reading this book. "
— Anne, 2/7/2014" Great entry into meditation. I had meditated before but this jump-started my practice. The tone is very accessible and friendly. "
— Carmen, 2/7/2014" This is a really good book, and although I didn't manage to do the complete 28-day program, I read the whole book and am sure I will go back through it often for encouragement in my meditation practice. I'm especially drawn to the Lovingkindness form of meditation, which is how I first heard of the author, and in following it, I can forgive myself for not sitting every day, and just start over. The CD is a nice addition to practicing, also. Thanks, Sharon! "
— Lois, 2/5/2014" I picked up this book after doing Loving Kindness and meditation for a number of years. Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation- A 28 Day program is an amazing book that is appropriate for both the beginner and for tose who have been practising meditation for many years. Sharon Slazman provides an easy to read book defining the "nuts and bolts" of meditation. She wonderfully describes the greater concentration, happiness and awarenesds as being only a few of the benefits of practising meditation. I would recommend this book in a heart beat. "
— Ingrid, 2/5/2014" Very, very basic which is fine for beginners, but I had expected something deeper. My issue, however, was not with the lack of depth, but the lack of a "28-day program" which was touted on the cover. I expect beginning meditators will like this book -- if they want to develop a meditation practice over a 4-week period and not with 28 day-to-day guidelines/suggestions. "
— Stephanie, 1/19/2014" A really hands-on-not-too-much dharma-talk look at how and why to make meditation a part of your daily practice. And for those audio-learners, it comes with a CD. "
— B.Z., 1/12/2014" checked it out from the library and have since ordered a copy of my own. ready to practice some mindfulness!!! "
— Laura, 1/7/2014" This is a very good primer for approaches to meditations designed to develop concentration skills and basic mindfulness. An excellent, accessible introduction--complete with guided meditations on CD--along with plenty of encouragement to develop and maintain a daily practice. "
— doug, 1/7/2014" Sharon, you are the best!!! Wonderful words! "
— Kathy, 12/14/2013" If you could only have one book about meditation, this would be a good choice. Easy to understand and lots of examples for clarification. I will probably read this one again. "
— Karen, 11/30/2013" a book to read and reread. Still working on putting it into practise. "
— Greet, 11/28/2013" An excellent book for people new to meditation and even long-time meditators. Salzberg's wit and wisdom shine through. "
— Eshaneh, 11/18/2013" This is a great book, and sets a very nice structure for beginning a meditation practice. She includes just enough research but not too much that it becomes dense. A very easy, quick read with a fantastic CD of guided meditations included. "
— Stacey, 11/16/2013" Sharon makes meditation easy and attainable. As someone who finds it amazingly difficult to sit still, this book really helped me settle in. My meditation practice has gotten stronger, and as a result I feel calmer, more focused, and more peaceful. "
— Jenn, 5/24/2013" A four-week program to start meditating or renew an existing practice. I loved the book. It was written in a clear, simple style with very real instructions for making mindfulness part of daily life. Loved the book and the accompanying CD. What a bargain! "
— L8start, 11/26/2012" The best intro to meditation book I've found. "
— Mollie, 8/1/2012" This book was well done and accessible, but honestly, if I've got some free time on my hands, I'm always going to choose reading over meditating. This is probably a compulsion that could be cured through meditation. Anyway, I'm hoping that some of this sticks with me. "
— Beth, 7/18/2012" particularly good tome on the subject of Meditation. It comes in a special Kindle edition that's pretty cool. "
