Plot Summary

We all have dreams and wishes, goals and ambitions, but all too often we feel as though these desires are forever beyond our reach. But what if this was an illusion? In the audiobook narrated by Peter Berkot, The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself, renowned author Michael Singer makes just that argument: The barriers in life are not external, but internal and self-constructed. By making the inward journey and thoroughly examining our own consciousness, we can unchain our minds from the limitations we ourselves create and realize the serendipity of a free conscience.

Utilizing various Eastern philosophies and meditative traditions, Singer passionately explores the inherent energy that dwells within all of us, and how we can maximize our use of this energy by knowing and controlling its fluctuations. By exploring the depths of our own sub-conscious, Singer shows how the reader can identify and eliminate the negative perceptions that prevent us from reaching our goals. Seemingly anodyne thoughts and actions severely limit our consciousness, Singer writes, and only through eliminating these can we truly achieve mental freedom. A master in the realm of inner space, Singer provides the reader with helpful ways to effectively explore the self, a seemingly daunting task that can be incredibly rewarding if done with the instruction of a master.

A veritable renaissance man, Singer has made major contributions to the fields of business, healthcare, environmental protection, and many more throughout the years. Arguably his most well-known achievement is the creation of the now famous Temple of the Universe in 1975, a yoga and meditation center devoted to the search for inner peace among people of all religious backgrounds. In addition to this book, Singer has authored several philosophical works, including The Search for Truth and Three Essays on Universal Law: Karma, Will, and Love.

"It's a hard book when you are resisting growth. However I live it. Still read it. My must have book at bedside. See his interview with Oprah on OWNTV Super Soul Sunday. Adds to the book. I only wish he had an audio with his reading the book. There are some other audio but not the book. Message to let it go. Let it flow. Love and forgiveness. Detachment. Objective vs. taking things on personally is priceless."

Publisher Summary

Who are you? When you start to explore this question, you find out how elusive it really is. Are you a physical body? A collection of experiences and memories? A partner to relationships? Each time you consider these aspects of yourself, you realize that there is much more to you than any of these can define. In The Untethered Soul, spiritual teacher Michael A. Singer explores the question of who we are and arrives at the conclusion that our identity is to be found in our consciousness, the fact of our ability to observe ourselves, and the world around us. By tapping into traditions of meditation and mindfulness, Singer shows how the development of consciousness can enable us all to dwell in the present moment and let go of painful thoughts and memories that keep us from achieving happiness and self-realization.

The Untethered Soul offers a frank and friendly discussion of consciousness and how we can develop it. In part one, Singer examines the notion of self and the inner dialogue we all live with. Part two examines the experience of energy as it flows through us and works to show listeners how to open their hearts to the energy of experience that permeates their lives. Ways to overcome tendencies to close down to the rest of the world are the subject of part three. Enlightenment, the embrace of universal consciousness, is the subject of part four. And finally, in part five, Singer returns to daily life and the pursuit of unconditional happiness. Throughout, the book maintains a light and engaging tone, free from heavy dogma and prescriptive religious references. The easy exercises that figure in each chapter help listeners experience the ideas that Singer presents.
