Legends tell of the evil god Torak coveting the power of the Orb of Aldur, until he was defeated in a final battle. Prophecy also speaks of a time when he will again awaken to seek dominance over all the world. Now the Orb has been stolen by a priest of Torak, and that time is at hand. Belgarath the Sorcerer and his daughter, Polgara the arch-Sorceress, are on the trail of the Orb, seeking to regain it before the final disaster.

With them goes Garion, a simple farm boy only months before, but now the focus of the struggle. He had never believed in sorcery, wanting no part of it. Yet with every league they travel, the power is growing within him, forcing him into acts of wizardry that he can't accept. His fate is inextricably woven into the fabric of an unfolding prophecy for glory or doom.

" Not as good as the first, but I still enjoyed it. I'm hoping the third one has more explanations! "

" I loved this book! Amazing! I'm loving watching Garion grow up but I have to say that I feel bad for him. People starting to look at him different because they can tell that he is powerful and not an ordinary boy. I like watching Ce'Nedra and Garion trying to figure out what to do with each other. I love all the main characters and I have to say that I feel like I'm on the journey with them. Amazingly written! "

" More of the same from Eddings. Pulpy and easy to read. Strangely unsophisticated. I am reluctant to admit he's a great storyteller, something about the too-simplistic nature of the series bothered me. "

" This book was kind of hard to get through the first half. However, it did end up picking up its pace and becoming a more entertaining read after the first half or 2/3rds. It will probably be a while before i start the third book of this series though. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Henry | 9/16/2010

" Just couldn't get into it as much as I tried. There are some nice stretches and Eddings certainly devotes a lot of time/energy to creating his world, but I found it tediously redundant as the characters traveled from one waypoint to another.... "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Jennie | 8/27/2010

" Still a fun, quick read. Not the best fantasy ever, true, but it's not overly dense or full of itself either. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Adam | 7/17/2010

" Not on the same lines as Feist or Brooks, but a very enjoyable read nonetheless. Classic epic fantasy. "
