"Timoken and his sister, Zobayda, under the protection of a forest jinni but pursued by evil viridees, straddle the world of men and the world of enchantments, seeking a home while remaining young by drinking a potion called Alixir."
— Susan (4 out of 5 stars)
“Timoken is a highly appealing young hero, and his panoply of human and magical friends provide just the right amount of help without stealing the show.”
— Publishers Weekly“Nimmo pulls out all the stops, creating three main characters with distinct personalities and placing them in an action-packed fantasy with drama, tension, and welcome bits of humor.”
— Booklist“Charlie Bone fans can rest easy knowing that Nimmo does not disappoint as she spins her magical web in this well-paced and expertly crafted tale.”
— School Library Journal“An action-oriented, magical adventure filled with an excellent sense of tension and foreboding.”
— Children’s Literature" A fun book about the beginning of the Red King. It was an easier read then most of the youth books that I read. I think that I will read it together with my first grader. I know that he would really like the story. "
— Heather, 2/12/2014" This book tells the origin story of the Red King from the Charlie Bone series. We never learned much about his origins during the Charlie Bone books so this book caught my interest when I first saw it. Unfortunately it didn't hold my interest while I was reading it. I had a very easy time putting it down, although I always intended to finish it at some point. There were parts throughout the story that caught my interest, but not enough to carry me through the entire book - even though it is quite short. Although for big Charlie Bone fans there are quite a few references that are fun. I particularly enjoyed learning the origins of the Flames, the three cats in Charlie Bone. I recommend this for those who are huge Charlie Bone fans or huge Jenny Nimmo fans. Don't start with this one, though. Read other Jenny Nimmo books first. 2.5 stars. "
— Luann, 1/28/2014" Shorter than Charlie Bone and Harry Potter, this fantasy series is fast-paced and introduces the story of two orphaned children who must harness their magic abilties in order to survive. "
— Carriek, 1/28/2014" Glad Nimmo decided to write prequels. I can't wait to see what's next for Charlie's ancestor. "
— Nathan, 1/6/2014" A quick, easy and delightful read! I loved reading about the Red King and the small snippets on relation to Charlie Bone! "
— Julia, 12/31/2013" Admittedly, I listened rather than read it and by that score it was everything I needed it to be. Can't wait for more. "
— Anita, 12/18/2013" I loved the Charlie Bone series and was thrilled to see Jenny Nimmo has added these prequels! Delightful story "
— Fit2bfit, 12/2/2013" Really more a 3.5. Not sure about flow of story. Care was taken early on and then half way it seemed another story started. Less detail, and more fog. Will look forward to next book, and hope it is a better blend. "
— Valerie, 12/2/2013" This was the first time I have read anything by this author and I must say this book is pretty interesting. I liked it a lot and enjoyed the story, now I must wait patiently for the next one in the series to come out. "
— Sara, 11/21/2013" I loved the book, but I really want to know what happens when they get to the castle! "
— Allanah, 11/7/2013" I actually liked this one better than most of the Charlie Bone books. Try to get past the prologue, though. It is stupid and boring and barely useful, but the rest of the book is quite good! "
— Heather, 11/3/2013" Lovely tale! "
— Kitty, 10/25/2013" I liked the original Charlie Bone books better, but the story was pretty good for this new series. We'll see how book 2 plays out and if the Red King's story can become more interesting. "
— Kevin, 10/11/2013" Chronicles the beginnings of the Red King, interesting information, but nonessential for the rest of the books "
— Roshni, 9/7/2013" The Secret Kingdom is a prequel to Nimmo's earlier series Charlie Bone. Although it is junior fiction, all readers of fantasy will love the lilting, magical story that follows Timoken over lands and through hundred of years to find a safe home for himself and his sister. "
— A, 3/12/2013" Pretty good. The plot doesn't always seem to follow logically, but it is full of pretty mental images and good heroes and bad villains. Not bad. "
— Clover, 2/14/2013" sad, action, adventuress "
— Riri, 12/21/2012" From the sounds of the first chapter, I maybe should have read the Charlie Bone series, but after a few chapters I was fine. "
— Elyce, 10/27/2012" Doing this one as read-aloud with my son. He loved Charlie Bone, but I found it a bit repetitive. "
— Kevin, 8/9/2012" This was sweet, although I thought the final fight could have had more gusto. Now I want to go back and read Charlie Bone again; I can't imagine the CB books without little Timoken's back story. "
— M, 7/25/2012" A really weird story with no plot or character development. The protagonist wanders the world for hundreds of years in search of a safe home, his fate entirely dependent on the magic gifts he was given in infancy. "
— Janet, 4/9/2012" Short and sweet. Fun little book that chronicles the red king before charlie boone. "
— Sharae, 3/10/2012" I've loved all of Jenny Nimmo's books so far. "
