Because she insists on fighting with words instead of her fists, 13-year-old Nita is regularly tormented by a gang of classmates. One day, running to escape their blows, she hides in the only safe place nearby-the library. When a book about wizardry catches her eye, Nita finds the help she needs in its pages. As she moves from chapter to chapter, Nita learns more sophisticated spells. Soon, stepping through a worldgate, she enters a shadowy city swirling with vicious taxicabs and carnivorous fire plugs. What begins as a simple quest quickly becomes a struggle to keep a powerful and ominous force from passing back into Nita's world. Ranked with the best of Madeleine L'Engle and Diana Wynne Jones, Diane Duane's magical tale of wizardry and wisdom has become a modern fantasy classic. Christina Moore's delightful narration captures all the excitement and danger in this thrilling fantasy adventure.

"Cute young adult novel set in relatively modern times. I really like this authors premise behind magic. This book would have truly captured my imagination as a kid. The only downside is that while the action is exciting, it is almost too much to be believable for the first book in a series."

" One of the students at Sunnyside said he really liked this book, so I borrowed it from the library. I was disappointed. I found it wordy and overstuffed with action. I mean, come on, a girl decides to become a wizard and is instantly saddled with saving New York City? Give her a break! I also didn't like the opening scene with the main character being beaten up by a gang of bullies. But there were a few parts I did like, especially when there was acknowledgment that between good and evil there are gradations and gray areas. And I liked the wizard's oath quite a bit. I might even copy it and put it up in the kids' room. "
— Zoe, 2/17/2014" one of my favorite growing up books! "
— Gloriavirtutisumbra, 1/7/2014" This book started out the way I remember Never Ending Story. It also has some things I wonder if J.K. Rowling maybe read and took ideas from for Harry Potter. It started out really fun and interesting and then became more and more random and strange. I still liked it, but there were times I thought, 'what am I reading?' But I guess that is fantasy for ya! "
— Chrystal, 12/18/2013" Re-read 9/8/08. I find it quite hilarious that I got a bad case of the hiccups as I was completing my re-read; anyone familiar with the plot will understand why. "
— Joy, 12/17/2013" Absolutely love this series. I think they're a witty, more cynical and grown-up(-ish) version of Harry Potter. One of my favorites. "
— Gina, 11/21/2013" A good example of young adult fiction with interesting world building and good characterization. "
— Jason, 11/16/2013" I picked this book up after I finished reading the latest Harry Potter. This is something that I would recommend to a middle school student that likes magical books. "
— Annamarie, 11/12/2013" Series of 8 books or so. I have read them all. The first came out well before the Harry Potter series. You an tell that the author is a bit of an environmentalist and scientist, knows that stuff. Very enjoyable series. "
— Lauraileen, 8/28/2013" I read this book a few years ago, and thought I'd read it again. A good read, once I got into it. "
— Meredith, 3/20/2013" There were some funny parts of this book but it never totally captured us, and we lost steam and didn't finish it. "
— MeLisa, 11/25/2012" I absolutely love this book. I can't believe that I haven't read it before. The minute I started reading it I was drawn in. The story is so good! Even though the end made me cry, a lot, this book is still going on my favorites shelf. "
— Charity, 10/8/2012" I didnt finish this book and don't think I will. I thought it was boring and didn't enjoy the writing style. "
— Kayla, 6/16/2012" I absolutely adore this series. I have yet to read past the third installment, however, so I think that it's time for a reread! "
— Paul, 3/20/2012" Not my kind of book. Major disappointment. It had so much promise, but it wasn't meant to be. "
— Izaak, 2/17/2012" Plot was a bit predictable but the book was still good and I enjoyed it quite a bit. A nice light read. "
— Tiamat_the_red, 1/12/2012" Better than Harry Potter! This is REAL Wizardry! "
— Terri, 6/24/2011" This was a pretty interesting read. It felt like the plot of this story could happen to any other normal person. I enjoyed the details and I liked the plot. It couldn't happen in real life, but while reading this, I forgot that magic doesn't really exist as far as we know it. Thouroughly enjoyable! "
— Sam, 6/20/2011" This book just may be the most boring book ever.... haha "
— Sophia, 6/10/2011" I read this book in ONE day. I was so into it that I took one break and then kept reading. This book was amazing at keeping the readers attention. The only bad thing was that it did describe somethings in way to much detail but I suppose some of it was necessary. All in all a great read. "
— Katherine, 6/4/2011" Science fiction doesn't appeal to me much, the outlandish worlds and even more strangely named characters. However, I fell in love with the Young Wizards series because each character felt so real to me, and I ended up buying 5 out of the 8 books in the collection. "
— Maybelately, 5/31/2011" STILL READING BOOK. WAIT FOR REVIEW. "
— Emma, 5/19/2011" I had to force my way through this book, I just couldn't get into it. "
— Lisa, 5/12/2011" It's very hard to get into and the way they explain the 'magic' used in this book is very complicated. Personally, I didn't particularly like it. :l As you can see, I didn't continue on reading the whole series :S "
— Angiee, 5/12/2011" This concept is really cool...but I'll be honest I was bored. "
