Publisher Description

Robert McCammon delivers his award-winning masterpiece, a novel of Southern boyhood, growing up in the 1960s, that reaches far beyond that evocative landscape to touch readers universally.

Boy’s Life is a richly imagined, spellbinding portrait of the magical worldview of the young—and of innocence lost.

Zephyr, Alabama, is an idyllic hometown for eleven-year-old Cory Mackenson, a place where monsters swim the river deep and friends are forever. Then, one cold spring morning, Cory and his father witness a car plunge into a lake—and a desperate rescue attempt brings his father face-to-face with a terrible, haunting vision of death. As Cory struggles to understand his father’s pain, his eyes are slowly opened to the forces of good and evil that surround him. From an ancient mystic who can hear the dead and bewitch the living, to a violent clan of moonshiners, Cory must confront the secrets that hide in the shadows of his hometown—for his father’s sanity and his own life hang in the balance.

"Amazing story and author! It almost has a "Stand By Me" feel to it, full of nostalgia, suspence, mystery. I enjoyed this book so much that I am going to buy a copy for my niece to read. After doing a little research, found out this book is on the required reading list for high school."

— Lisa Garcia  (5 out of 5 stars)

Quotes

  • “The kind of naïve and sentimental storytelling most of us thought we had to give up with the Hardy Boys, Albert Payson Terhune, and baseball-card biographies…For sheer screwball storytelling exuberance, McCammon’s book is hard to top.”

    — Entertainment Weekly
  • “A magical mystery tour of growing up in the deep south…Boy’s Life handles coming of age and a boy’s coming to grips with life and death magnificently. McCammon has created—at least up to this point in his career—his masterwork.”

    — Locus
  • “A tour de force of storytelling.”

    — BookPage
  • “The mystery will satisfy the most finicky aficionado; McCammon has also produced a boisterous, poignant travelogue through a stormy season in one boy’s life, peopled with the zaniest, most memorable Southern characters since those of Harper Lee.”

    — Publishers Weekly
  • “Strongly echoing the childhood elegies of King and Bradbury and every bit their equal: a cornucopia of bittersweet fantasy storytelling that is by far McCammon’s finest book.”

    — Kirkus Reviews
  • “Newbern keeps the listener engaged as the threads of seemingly unconnected vignettes are woven together into a tapestry evoking a time and place that lives only in memory. His delivery is meticulous, with a careful pacing, enunciation, and attention to detail that bring Cory’s disparate memories into a unified story.”

" I just love this book, I read it many years ago and it hasn't lost its appeal. Beautifully narrated story of a small town boy and his adventures. Life at in the 50's seems sweet but this fellows journey has a lot of twist and turns. If you like 'Stand by me' you'll love this tale. "

" Best of the best... both the story by McCammon, and the reader. The experience wouldn't have been as outstanding as it was were it not for the narrator, Mr. Newbern. Just fantastic, and so immersive. "
