"so, whenever i read a mystery novel, i really want there to be a secret gay love affair or several secret gay love affairs or maybe a trans-person at the center of the mystery and honestly - when it comes to providing this sort of thing, anne perry delivers. i realize it would take some of the fun out of the mysteries in general if they were all gay interest, but at least some of them are. this one is good - because of course i wanted anstiss and byam to be gay, and towards the end it was pretty obvious that was the case -but there is still a nice surprise because perry delivers a crazy murder suicide! yay! best victorian murder mysteries around."

" Good to get back into this series again. "
— Allison, 2/20/2014" Part of the Inspector Pitt series. I thought it was interesting how polite everyone has to be all the time--makes it hard to investigate a murder! "
— Arapahoe, 1/21/2014" I have read a lot of the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mysteries by Anne Perry starting with the Cater Stree Hangman. They are set in Victorian England and tell about Charlotte and Thomas as time passes. Each story is separate but their lives are in time order. "
— Virginia, 1/19/2014" Another good Victorian-era mystery. "
— Sally, 1/16/2014" Oh, this was a great one! I started it not expecting much because the last couple of books by Perry were rather on the awful side. This one had a new social injustice of the Victorian age (usurers), enough side story of both Thomas Pitt and Micah Drummand to make it personal, a plausible murder plot line and even though you saw part of the ending coming it still had a jaw dropping twist. I wanted to read it again right after I finished it to catch the nuances I knew I had missed. "
— Allison, 1/15/2014" Another good murder mystery! I can usually see through plots and guess what is coming but I usually only figure out what is coming a page before it does... or have thought of it early on and then dropped the idea. "
— Kirsten, 12/31/2013" How to investigate a murder in 18th century polite society. Pitt always gets his man in the end. 3 stars "
— Jenny, 12/20/2013" Excellent Victorian mystery novel. "
— Elizabeth, 12/14/2013" Classic Anne Perry...surprise ending! "
— Natalie, 11/22/2013" The debut of the Inner Circle, which dominates the rest of the books, if I remember correctly. I recalled the "shocking" part of the story which caused the blackmail/murder, but I forgot the climatic scene. And it's rather memorable! "
— Mary, 11/6/2013" United Kingdom "
— Edenlass, 7/2/2013" dragged through many parts. Did have some twists and turns, not my usual type of read "
— Nancy, 3/7/2013" Listening to it in my car--trying to decide if this was the series I started many moons ago...think it may have been her other mystery/historical fiction series...Monk? "
— Jill, 3/27/2012" The beginning was kind of slow but then it picked up near the end. "
— Teri, 8/24/2011" The more I read from this series, the more I like the books. This was definitely hard to put down. "
— Sue, 5/31/2011" Love this series, the Pitts are such wonderful characters. I was so sad when I finished the series. "
— Donna, 4/30/2011" A few new characters enter Charlotte and Thomas's orbit and captured my attention, but once again the ending's a bit too easy to guess. "
— Jessica, 4/7/2011" If you are looking for a good murder mystery, Ann Perry's novels are excellent. "
— Audrey, 3/17/2011" Perry presents a good mystery, with engaging characters. I like her Charlotte & Thomas Pitt and I generally enjoy her loving historical and social detail. This time I found it excessive and cloying, so that I was able to put down the book and watch movies with Ray. "
— L, 1/15/2011" This was not a real page turner for me because I was so confident I had detected who the killer was and the real motive........the last 4 pages proved me DEAD WRONG!!! It was just as shocking to me as it was to Thomas.....neither one of us saw it coming. Great read. "
— Cindy, 10/27/2010" A delightful couple. "
