    " A Victorian murder mystery. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Judith | 2/6/2014

" Ann Perry always paints a detailed and interesting portrait of life in Victorian England. This particular story, however, I did not find as compelling as some of her other novels. I always look forward to another Ann Perry mystery, and I must say that I did continue reading avidly to find out what was the answer to all the who-done-it question, but in the end, it was not as satisfying a read as I had anticipated. Of course, I would still recommend this book to those who enjoy a good Ann Perry novel. "

" Another great Anne Perry mystery. I thought it ended a little abruptly, but overall a good read. "

" Fun read, appealing characters, ending a bit rushed. "

" Book #8 in the series: Emily's husband is poisoned. I felt sorry for the dog. What kind of moron gives coffee to a dog? "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Vicki L. | 1/16/2014

" Great in its genre (cozy mystery). "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Nicole | 1/12/2014

" One has to wonder if there isn't anyone she won't kill off in this series... "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Allison | 1/9/2014

" This one kept me up late finishing it and it was really really good, but the ending, the "why", was not spelled out exactly and left me a little confused. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Cindy | 1/9/2014

" I wish I had read this later as the characters would make more sense. I have just started Callender Square and it is introducing people who were killed in this book. I will try and read these in order. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jeanette | 12/6/2013

" Anne Perry's books are a good read. I enjoy the story and the characters. I did not figure out the murderer at all before finishing the book. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Carol Wright | 9/11/2013

" I am a big fan of Ann Perry and the picture she paints of life in Victorian era England with such vivid descriptions of class distinctions. I have read most of the Hester and Monk books and prefer them to the Charlotte and Pitt books. This one was not a favorites. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Rebecca | 4/9/2013

" Too much filler. I got so tired of hearing the same whodunit theories over and over ad nauseum. The ending was too abrupt, the killer's motive too unlikely. I really wanted to like this one but the padding drove me nuts. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Samantha | 4/7/2013

" Excellent another good read from Anne Perry. For me it's not so much the story as the characters who I love to read about and follow from story to story. Highly recommended to those who like period mysteries and want an easy read too. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Kathleen | 3/11/2013

" Eighth book in the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series -- this one involves Charlotte's sister, Emily. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Becky Hanlin | 2/1/2013

" Maybe 2.5 stars. I usually like Anne Perry because there aren't any gruesome parts to her books, but this one had several gross things in it that I could've done without. There were a few parts of the book that I did like, but overall it's not one that I would recommend to anybody else. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Becky | 1/21/2013

" GREAT murder mystery set in 19th century England (though written more recently- so not hard to read). The story kept me hooked throughout. It does contain many adult themes and some of the horrors of poverty and of the upper class- so not for kids- but well written. As an adult, I really enjoyed it. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Rae | 8/15/2012

" Another well-written Victorian mystery by a period master. I enjoy her period atmosphere. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Jen | 5/7/2012

" Good, like all of hers. A historical murder mystery--I know I can always grab one and have a good read. I enjoy the Charlotte & Thomas Pitt ones more than the Monk ones. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Joan | 8/22/2011

" Great to listen to (Davina Porter is a wonderful "reader"). There are rather long stretches where not a lot happens, but I don't mind because the pictures Anne Perry paints of late-Victorian society are so detailed/brilliant that I'm absorbed in the atmosphere. "

" Thoroughly enjoyed this installment of Charlotte & Thomas Pitt but have to wonder at Charlotte's family experiencing yet another death in the family due to murder. Very unlucky and very unlikely. Still, it was a great read. "
