A New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly Bestseller “Poignant, engrossing.”—People • “Lisa Wingate takes an almost unthinkable chapter in our nation’s history and weaves a tale of enduring power.”—Paula McLain Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty. Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption. Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong. "I have listened again and again. The plot and characters are not the reason for this. A desire to grasp the children’s’ thinking, feeling, emotions and connection to one anther were.I knew nothing of the events concerning child marketing during my own childhood! I knew a few adopted children but it is doubtful they were procured in this horrendous way as we lived in New England. Or maybe there WAS such a thing. Something I intend to research. My mind is now very curious. Thank you!"

" I couldn't stop thinking about this story. It stayed with me day and night. "
— Linda, 8/2/2023" Total enjoyment. My first audiostore download after many, many years of cassette audio. A lucky choice on my part but one to be recommended. "
— Jreader, 5/22/2023" Great book. The characters were engaging and the plot was interesting and kept you guessing. I like that it is based on events of the past and gives you references if you want to know more at the end of the book. "
— Klapp, 7/29/2022" LIsa Wingate crafts a compelling fictional account of true events involving the corrupt adoption industry and the abusive treatment of children for monetary profit. "
— Greg Winterbutn, 11/7/2018" Got this for my wife and I to listen to on another road trip because she was getting tired of my Michael Connelly and David Baldacci Novels. Thought she would like a nice "woman's story" Wow, this was a "could barely stop" novel. Took short breaks so we could get back to listening. This is much more than a Woman's Story. "
— Paul, 7/27/2018" Great story, well told/narrated. Horrifying to know such things went on in reality. One of those stories that more people need to be exposed to in order to know about an aspect of our history as a country. "
— Penny, 5/24/2018" Loved it! If you love historical fiction you will love this book! "
— kat, 2/14/2018" What a great story this was. I had no idea about any of the historical aspects of this book, so I found that fascinating, in addition to the story itself being well written and and very interesting. I would highly recommend this book. "
