The sensational killings that have rocked San Francisco appear to be unrelated except in their brutality. But detective Lindsay Boxer senses there's some thread connecting them all. She calls her friends in the Women's Murder Club together to see if they can discover what it is.
Working with Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas, Assistant District Attorney Jill Bernhardt, and medical examiner Claire Washburn, Lindsay discovers that there is indeed a link. Each of the victims had a close relative in a particular profession, a profession that sends a chill through Lindsay's heart.
The partners in the Women's Murder Club deduce where the killer is likely to strike next and bait a trap that can't be resisted. But if their calculation is wrong, the consequences will be lethal. And there will be no second chance.

"I must say, I am thoroughly enjoying this series and just ordered the third installation. The narrator is easy to follow and has a very relaxing tone. There were times where a male voice interjected that I did not especially enjoy, the original narrator could have covered the entire book (in my opinion). Having two narrators did not take anything from the recital but it did not add anything either. Overall the book was great and I can wait to hear what unfolds in book three of the series."
— Slow Motion (5 out of 5 stars)
“This is Patterson’s richest, most engaging novel since When the Wind Blows and, as the second in his Women’s Murder Club series, yet more evidence that this prolific writer can roam beyond Alex Cross with style and success...The story ripples with twists and some remarkably strong scenes.”
— Publishers Weekly“As with Patterson’s best novels, the surprises keep coming until the final pages. This novel solidifies the new series and helps guarantee that readers will flock just as eagerly to the Women’s Murder Club books as they do to the Alex Cross novels.”
— Booklist“Written in Patterson’s no-nonsense style and read by Melissa Leo and Jeremy Piven, the story is suspenseful, grim, and not altogether predictable.”
— Library Journal (audio review)“2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many tight curves...it doesn’t sacrifice good characters to a twisted plot...If you haven’t picked up a James Patterson novel in a while, this is a great time to start anew.”
— Amazon.com, editorial review“Short chapters keep the action going by at whizz-bang speed...2nd Chance powerfully realizes both its heroes and villains, and fans of Patterson’s bestselling Cross novels will be equally delighted with this series.”
— Barnes & Noble, editorial review“Intriguing, exciting, and frightening.”
— Weekend Australian" very good. i am hooked and will be listening to the whole series. "
— courtney, 10/16/2016" Really enjoyed this one, thought I had it all figured out, but I was happily wrong. "
— Marc-Antoine, 2/14/2014" Good story with enough to keep me going. "
— Leroy, 2/7/2014" Love the characters! Lindsey Boxer and Claire Washburn are fun, loving characters! Good novel, great pace! "
— Marynelson321, 2/4/2014" I really enjoy this series, fast reads. Great characters and interesting story lines. "
— Jamie, 1/31/2014" In this second book I can see the pattern developing. I know there is always some cookie cutter formula for series, this one the theme is noone is safe and the only people to trust are your girls. Still they are good and quick and I'll keep reading, although at this rate I'll be caught up on the series in a week. "
— Tara, 1/30/2014" Started out great then fizzled. It became very predictable and almost unbelievable as to how they figured out who it was. Of course at first they were wrong and then low and behold she thought of something she say only once and immediately found it. For the first 200 pages this was looking like a 5 star, by the end I would give it 2.5 but do not have that option. "
— Dan, 1/25/2014" This was a good book as well. It got me hooked on this series. Any James Patterson fan should read this series if they haven't already "
— Angel, 1/23/2014" Finished this book today, I really enjoyed it. I totally didn't figure this one out until the end. I can't wait to read the next book in the series when it comes out. "
— Beth, 1/17/2014" As I already know the characters probably not quite as gripping as the first book but I will be back for number three. "

— Lisa, 12/18/2013" Road Trip CD. Good read. "
— Leslie, 12/13/2013" Love this series - it's based in San Francisco so fun that you know places they talk about. Stories based on 4 women - a homicide inspector, medical examiner, reporter and assistant DA - and how they come together to solve crimes. "
— Pandora, 12/4/2013" I liked the first of the Women's Murder Club series better... but it typical Patterson style, the book was a page turner. Great knee replacement recovery reading... entertaining, full of suspense and quick to read. "
— Mindy, 11/25/2013" Not as good as the first, but still a great story. Moving on the the third now. "
— Kevin, 11/21/2013" At the end of a long and tiring day, this book was just enough of a light read without insulting my intelligence. :) "
— Nic, 8/27/2013" These books are page-turners. The short chapters help. But I find the actions of the characters to be unrealistic. The main character takes unrealistic and needlessly dangerous chances. Particularly in this book, as a lieutenant, she should know better. "
— Pam, 7/16/2013" These books give me hope.....that I could be published. "
— Bella, 6/27/2013" I really enjoyed this :-) Less creepy than the first, but still fun to read. "
— Natalie, 1/20/2013" I enjoy any book by James Patterson, just wish language wasnt so rough at times "
— Kelly, 10/23/2012" great sequel... "
— Kguentert, 10/19/2012" It was okay. The writing was nothing special. The storyline was alright. It follows the same structure as the first book, so much so that I was waiting for the twist. "
— Missme, 10/9/2012" Ditto to first in series. Page turner. Luv luv luv "
— Dee, 8/6/2012" On the 2nd last chapter on my kindle and I lose the story ..... my kindle has gone wonky and now I dont know the end , ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH "
— Val , 7/30/2012" Lots of fun as usual. I can count on JP just about every time. Now it's on to "3rd Degree.". Tampa Bay Library Consortium eBook. "
— Bob, 7/5/2012" A worthy follow up to 1st to Die. Getting to know the characters more now. Good story. On to the next one now - 3rd Degree. "
— Leslea, 4/4/2012" Typical Patterson page-turner, fast moving etc etc. Not quite as good as the first in this series. Slightly disappointing..... "
— Dignan107, 9/24/2011" Really liking these books!!!!! "
— Katy, 8/16/2011" Slightly better than the 1st in his series. Looks like his co-author does a better job . "

— Miraelma, 7/8/2011" Enjoy very much. "
— Pkosecki, 7/1/2011" Again Patterson has come through with a fast-moving story that has some nice twists. Believe I am becoming an avowed Patterson fan. "
— Tom, 5/24/2011" Another typical Patterson book. I like the fact that they are a quick read, and I like the main characters, especially Claire. "
— Sue, 5/23/2011" I rarely find a book that just grabs me. This was one of those rare finds that I just enjoyed from cover to cover. I want to read all of James Patterson's books now that I have a taste of his writing. "
— Ben, 5/20/2011" Fast read--easy to see why it became a TV series! "
— Tanya, 5/9/2011" <br/>Excellent, these books are so well written and easy to read ideal if you want something you put down and pick up and get straight back into. (although perhaps I shouldn't be reading it between customers at work) "
— Rachel, 5/7/2011" Not as good as the first one in the series, but a nice follow up. This is a good series told from the point of view of female characters. I also like how in some chapters, the point of view switches to the killer's and other people from the book. Decent twists and good plot. "
— Emily, 5/7/2011" Audio Book. It was entertaining enough but, there is something about how girly she acts that rubs me funny. "
— Jake, 5/6/2011" This is the last of the Women's murder club mysteries for me to read. I really enjoyed all nine and am waiting not so patiently for number 10. Good engrossing reads. "
— Jeanne, 5/4/2011" Eh. It was better than the first book but I found myself skipping pages that dealt more with the characters vs the case they were trying to solve. I guess I just can't get myself to care about these people. "
— Natasha, 4/13/2011" It was okay. The writing was nothing special. The storyline was alright. It follows the same structure as the first book, so much so that I was waiting for the twist. "
— Missme, 4/11/2011" Well, I do enjoy this series and it keeps me reading and reading but it does swear a lot. The F-word is used a little much. "
