Plot Summary

"The 6th Target" is a #1 New York Times bestselling audiobook by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. One of the works featured in the "Women's Murder Club," the novel is set in present-day San Francisco.

A murder occurs when a shooter goes momentarily mad on the ferry in the San Francisco Bay just as it is pulling into its mooring to allow passengers to disembark. The gunman shows no respect for children, males or females, age or even for the ferry's security people. If in his line of fire, the subject becomes a victim.

The shooter is named Fred. Fred, for some unknown, ungodly reason, snaps. What is it that drives him to kill, without any semblance of rational thought, the most innocent of victims?

The novel is a carefully crafted investigation by one of the police detectives, Lindsay Boxer, and a team that includes a number of friends of Claire Washburn, one of the victims who are critically injured. Claire is the county's medical examiner, and she is their friend.

At the same time, Detective Boxer is embroiled in a kidnapping case that involves children who are child prodigies, where mistakes have been made that are feared to be fatal ones. It's a race against time for Detective Boxer as she follows lead after lead, leaving no room for error.

Acclaimed author James Patterson has published nineteen consecutive #1 New York Times bestselling novels. Statistics on his website claim that since 2006 "one out of every 17" hardcover fiction books sold was a book he had written. He remains one of the best-selling novelists today and continues to write from his Palm Beach, Florida home.

"James Patterson is one of my favorite authors and this book is no different. I was very impressed with it and very excited to not have figured out who did it by the middle of the book!"

Publisher Summary

When a horrifying attack leaves one of the four members of the Women's Murder Club struggling for her life, the others fight to keep a madman behind bars before anyone else is hurt.

And Lindsay Boxer and her new partner in the San Francisco police department run flat-out to stop a series of kidnappings that has electrified the city: children are being plucked off the streets together with their nannies--but the kidnappers aren't demanding ransom. Amid uncertainty and rising panic, Lindsay juggles the possibility of a new love with an unsolvable investigation, and the knowledge that one member of the club could be on the brink of death.

And just when everything appears momentarily under control, the case takes a terrifying turn, putting an entire city in lethal danger. Lindsay must make a choice she never dreamed she'd face--with no certainty that either outcome has more than a prayer of success.

McCormick nimbly depicts a wide range of characters, from a madman controlled by voices to Lindsay’s gruff but caring former partner, who is now her boss…Skillful narration.”

  • “Get ready for an adrenaline rush—James Patterson is on the loose.”

    — Barnes & Noble, editorial review
  • “Three investigations, one mystery, a courtroom thriller, and some romance intertwined throughout the proceedings. It’s difficult to reasonably ask for more in the newest installment of a series that keeps getting better and better. Those who haven’t read any of the novels in the Women’s Murder Club series are cheating themselves. Fans can only hope that Patterson and Paetro will find a way to keep these books coming with greater frequency.”
