"I really really loved the stories that had people that I recognized from Tortall. The other stories were good, but I like when I can connect to the characters more, and that's hard to do in a short story. Ultimately I don't think anthologies are for me - but honestly, who can pass up Tamora Pierce!?"

" I really enjoyed the tales in this book. They drew me in immediately, I bought and read it all in one afternoon! "
— Julie, 2/19/2014" As story shorts go, these are not bad. I think it would have been better had I read some of the Tortall books first. Great for 12 and up or readers with advanced reasoning skills. I will probibly use this book with my daughter for discussion when she is at a higher reading level. "
— Yvonne, 2/17/2014" I love Tamora Pierce, but I was a little let down by this collection of stories. It honestly could have been better. It was nice to catch up with past characters and see what their lives looked like after the novels ended but I wasn't really swept away by each story as I was hoping. If you are a fan of Miss Pierce you should take a swing at the book, you may have a different opinion than I. However, if you are a new reader, don't start here. Start with the Song of the Lioness quarter to fall in love with Tortall as is right. "
— Jessica, 1/24/2014" I like the author, and a collection of short stories was just what I was in the mood for. All but one were fantasy stories or at least had fantastic elements. "
— Rachel, 1/18/2014" It was fun visiting Tortall and surrounding areas. I really enjoyed the stories. I would have liked more stories about people I had met in other books, especially one about Alanna, but overall it was a satisfying read. "
— Rachel, 11/16/2013" This was my first introduction to Tamora Pierce. I thought most of the stories were solid. "
— Jason, 10/20/2013" Out of all the different tales in this book, the one of Nawat is far and away my favorite. The choice he has to face is simply gutwrenching and i love tamora pierce all the more for it. "
— Mia, 10/17/2013" I always want more of Tortall! "
— Kelly, 8/2/2013" A good collection of short stories. I liked some stories better than others due to reading the tortall series and connecting books. I wish some short stories were novels because they were really interesting. "
— Deanna, 6/26/2013" This was a fun mix of Tortall stories, and stories completely unrelated. I especially liked the one about Kitten. :D "
— Danielle, 6/18/2013" 3.5 stars - some stories were better than others. The best part of this collection is getting to revisit favorite characters from other titles set in Tortall (one about Aly! one with Daine!). "
— Karin, 6/18/2013" I liked the stories where I already knew the characters. Nawat and Kitten were the best. "
— Maria, 2/17/2013" I liked the short stories. But when I got to the second to last one I couldn't read it anymore. I was quite disappointed in the author for writing a story like that. Stick with your fantasy world, don't try to write about ours. "
— Ashley, 11/6/2012" Most of the stories were entertaining. I liked some better than others and some I wanted to read even more about. I don't think the last two fit in very well into the collection, since they weren't about Tortall at all. "
— Marina, 7/21/2012" The Tortall stories were wonderful - I was less enamored with the non-Tortall ones though. "
— Anne, 2/27/2012" Pierce writes about women overcoming bigotry and becoming strong. always a good reminder and source of inspiration. "
— Esther*, 6/15/2011" could not put this book down. woke up with it on my face several times.<br/>couldn't get enough "
— Jersey, 6/5/2011" I'm not usually a big fan of short-story collections, but this one was great! I loved reading little snippets about some of the old characters that I loved, and the new characters that I wanted to learn more about. Anyone who is a fan of Tamora Pierce will love this book. "
— Katie, 6/4/2011" These were very enjoyable short stories. I found a couple of the stories to be much better than others, but overall I liked the collection. I wished that they had been a little more magical. "
— Teresa, 6/2/2011" I really enjoy reading short stories by an author before I commit to a series, especially a long and convoluted series. Tamora Pierce seems to be a prolific writer and I think I will enjoy a lot of her stories. "
— Ginger, 6/1/2011" Pretty Good anthology. Feminist leaning, Sometimes, the ending too pat. But good imagination and world building. Serious themes of male on female violence, honor killing, psychopathic group bullying. I'd say , best for 9th grade and up. "
