"Another great series from Tamora Pierce! And you don't have to have read any of her other ones to understand what is going on but it is nice because she references those other characters. I am very excited to read the next one in this series and see what happens with Aly."

" I went back and forth about whether to give this two or three stars. On the one hand - the plot and mythology of the story is really engaging and well-developed. On the other hand - the prose of the story itself is not great. I rolled my eyes as characters that are supposed to exist in another world slipped into tired English jargon and cliches. But once I reminded myself that this is juvenile fiction and not really intended for someone who minored in English Lit and edits writing for a living, I was able to focus more on the story than the actual prose. "

About Trini Alvarado
Trini Alvarado is an American actress best known for her feature film roles in Little Women, The Frighteners, and Paulie, for which she was nominated for an ALMA Award. Her television credits include series such as Finge, Law & Order: SUV, and The Jury as well as TV movies including Bitter Winter and The Last Dance. As a youth, she appeared as Melinda in the Broadway performance of Runaways.
